Slackware/Xfce - the terminal colors are way too dark.

I'm using Slackware 12.2, Xfce, and xfterm4 as the terminal.
The colors are so dark ... I can't find anything on how to change this, besides the difficult way of doing things ... The color chooser they have, I'm confused as to what each color is used for, and why there are so many. If anyone here uses Slackware and Xfce, would you please let me know what you personally do about this?

The best (or maybe I should say easiest) solution I have come up with is just clicking and dragging the bottom row of colors to the top. I realize it's not really an effort to customize them yourself, but I'm wondering what you do (if you do anything) about this.

I have my colors set up per user in ~/.bash_profile and ~/.dir_colors - independent of using the console, Xfce or whatever...

So using 'root' gives an ugly red background, wherever I am, to warn me that I am wandering on dangerous grounds...

What you just said about using configuration files, and what I said about just changing the colors in the options is enough to fix it for me ... I'm sure any other information would be very easy to find. If I had phrased the original question as "What do you do?" I wouldn't, but since I posted saying that the terminal colors are too dark, I'm gonna mark this as solved. I'm sure the information given here, and other information is enough and easy to find ...
