Slackware with Aptitude
 

Does anyone know of any distro that is Slack based with Apt ?
I know there is Blag (Fedora with Apt) and a load of Deb based dists,
but if anyone knows of a Slackware/Debian killer combo please let me know,
cause I want one.
And if there isn't, can some make one... (Jokes, but for real).

You can use slapt-get with Slackware, but I am not sure if it works exactly the same way as apt-get.

If the debian tools, such as apt-get and dpkg can be ported to the Mac OS X (Darwin) then I don't know why they couldn't be ported to another linux distro, such as Slackware. I would think all that would need to be done is someone willing, or having a rsync capable server, or even ftp for that matter, somewhere that will actually take the time to compile and build the packages, and maybe some different trees. Like 10.2 and 10.3 and 10.4 (Mac trees) but for slackware could be 8.1 9.0, etc, and could even offer an easier dist-upgrade command, instead of using the directions that I have read on the subject.
This indeed would be a very useful tool, one which I could probably start work on if I can just get the laptop I am working on finished. I started a thread about it somewhere else, and am having little no no luck on my limited experience, had it up to 10.1 but brought it back to 7.1 because I couldn't figure out how to activate the pc card modem, and in the base Zipslack 7.1 it just works.

I think the answer to your question is NO. Sorry but slapt-get or swaret will never be the same as using apt-get in Debian. Debian is made from the ground up with dependency checking ability and the use of apt-get in mind. Slackware is built with no innate dependency checking. There also is no large official repository of every software package known to man built in .deb packages as Debian has. Yes, I know there is linuxpackages but those are not official packages.

The official Slack packages do not contain any dependency related information so it would never work the same. To be honest I wouldn't want it to. One of the biggest reasons Slack remains stable is because of the manual upgrade/update process.

Most of the time when you hear of someone's Slack system being borked it's because they either tried to do an upgrade using a 3rd party tool like swaret or slapt-get, or they did it manually without reading the changelog first.

Using all 3rd party repositories may make it possible, such as using linuxpackages.net along with swaret or slapt-get to maintain and upgrade your system, but then it wouldn't really be a Slack system any more. It would become a Slack-based system built of 3rd party packages. While I do use 3rd party packages for things not included in the official Slack repositories, I wouldn't want my system built or upgraded just on them. I feel you would lose some stability.

I guess my point is, is you want Slack stability, maintain your system manually as intended.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Slackware. I love the getpkg/installpkg programs that you can use.
