Slackware v. 3 on Hacker Public Radio

I had some time while doing chores today to catch up with podcasts on Hacker Public Radio, as my listening time was sorely curtailed last year.

In this one, Kevie and Andrew reminisce about how they got into Linux, and one of him describes his introduction to Linux using Slackware v. 3. That part comes early in the podcast (Full Disclosure: I haven't listened all the way through yet). I thought some of you might find it an interesting listen.

Me, I'm a late-comer. I started with v. 10.

I started somewhere around v3, the walnut creek cd rom. Built the 30some floppies and installed on a 386, compiled the kernel and everything I needed for network and video but then didn't do much with it until the early 2000's.

The earliest CD set I still have is the March 1995 InfoMagic, which contains Slackware 2.2. But I remember installing Slackware from floppies before I owned a CDROM drive.

I think I still have my old walnut creek 6 cdrom set that had Slackware, some other distro(s) I never tried, and several mirrors of source repos such as sunsite, funet, etc. It would be interesting to find those cds. I think it was Slackware 3.3 that was included. Good days.

I'm trying to recall now, I know I had two different sets. A google search says the walnut creek made 72 floppies but i don't recall there being that many unless that includes source.

Yggdrasil so something like that was the other.

I had moved in my house in late 95 so it was after that.

I want to say one cd has slackware 2.somethng and the other 3.something

ok Yggdrasil wasn't Slackware http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yggdrasil_Linux/GNU/X must have been another cs set.

must have been v3, wikipedia says 2 was on 73 floppies and 3 was the first cd rom version. I remember having to use a windows rawwrite to maake the boot floppy images and then copy the rest from a1,a2,a3, etc to floppies from the CD.

I would have really started with 9.1 or 10. Looking at my LQ history I see I had deadrat on my laptop ay 11/2003 but switched to Slack shortly after so I would have installed 9.1 or waited until 10. I remember trying 11 and it disabled tap to click on my touchpad any I could not get it working so I had to go back to 10 until 12 came out.
