Slackware Upgrade Survey
I'm currently running a small server at home, to route my DSL connection, run an e-mail server, and serve up some simple webpages. Right now I'm using Slack 8.1... Should I upgrade to 9.0? I don't use X, so enhancements there don't really matter to me.
If I shouldn't upgrade, why not? If I should upgrade, what is the easiest/fastest way to do it? |
I'd just suggest, upgrade what you need or use. Or if there are any existing packages on your system now that may have some sort of security issue and has patches or updates, update those. But I wouldn't mess with just reinstalling and reconfiguring everything all over again. I still have 8.0 on two of my servers at home..

I agree with Tricky, just check out the "patches" tree of the Slackware-8.1. Upgrade any packages that are there for security reasons. I haven't found any compelling reason to upgrade an X workstation. Slack 9.0 just doesn't offer that much new stuff, at least for me. In fact I think I would loose more than I would gain. I will probably just skip it until I see the next release.

I wouldn't upgrade unless you absolutely want to or need to. I ran Slack 7.1 on my webserver till 9 came out. it ran wonderfully without problems, but when I got here to school I wanted to install 4 hard drives and repartition it all so I installed 9 then. But if you've got a server thats running smooth, no need to fix something that isn't broken eh? :D
