Slackware Resolution Settings

Hello,

I would first like to say hello to everyone on this board. I have used resources from this board numerous times before, but this is the first time that I felt the need to really ask a question here, so I'm just now creating an account.

I'm trying out Slackware (13.37) with KDE due to Ubuntu's newest release lacking severely, and leaving me with a bad taste in my mouth.

Anyways, when I start X, it defaults to a resolution of 1024x768. I'm using a laptop connected to a monitor using an HDMI cable. If I go to the "Size & Orientation" in the display options I'm able to change the laptop screen to 1366x768 and the monitor to 1920x1080 and both work fine. (They both also have "auto" by them on the selection page). When I restart the computer, or even just X and then start X, it goes back to the default. I've noticed that I don't have an xorg.conf in /etc/X11/. I've tried to create an xorg.conf with "X -configure" and tried to start X with this configuration file, and it either just gives me a plain black screen, or sometimes I can see a solid cursor in the upper left hand corner. I've also tried to edit the "xorg.conf-vesa" with the appropriate sizes, and when I try to start X with that file, it does the same thing.

Does anybody have any idea what I could be doing wrong here? I basically want to just keep the settings that I can get through the GUI and have them automatically set up when I start my computer. Please & thank you for any information!

Please post the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log when you start X without an xorg.conf.
This should provide details of your graphics card, driver in use, where X is seeing the graphics card outputs as well as the monitor resolutions as seen by querying EDID.

It may also be useful to see the xorg.conf file generated by 'X -configure'.

I was working on getting the log files up this morning, but it was continuously saying that they were too long, so I was trying to make them short enough but ran out of time before I had to go to work.

I do have some additional information, I've discovered that the file created with the "X -configure" command is in fact valid, and at least working. If I use the "-retro" option, I can tell that it's working, but I'm not sure at what resolution it's running when testing.

If I rename the new file that's created to xorg.conf and place it in /etc/X11/ when I start the X window it still is in the default 1024 resolution.

Not sure if this is any more help, but I'll be posting the log files as soon as I am able to. Thanks again!

It once happened to me on a onboard display card computer

The solution for me was login as root the go startx

Set the resolution save the settings

Then go back to previous user and the settings are correct ..

The question remains as to what video card you're running as it does make a difference to how to set it up perfectly.

Is there anything special that you have to do in order to save the settings? I click "accept" or whatever, and then confirm that I want to keep the resolution, but then I don't see any other options such as to write to the Xorg file like it does in Ubuntu... I tried this though, and no luck. Just not sure if I need to do anything to save the settings....

Thanks for the Xorg.0.log. It really does help.

First, when posting a long listing in this forum, please place the listing inside either code tags or quote tags. It greatly helps with readability. (If you do not know, a code tag starts with the text CODE placed inside square brackets and ends with the text /CODE inside square brackets.) Please edit your posts to try this!

Hopefully this xorg.conf when copied to your /etc/X11/ directory will do what you want.

It is left as an exercise for you to work out what this does. I am usually averse to this level of spoon feeding, but will take pity on a newbie Ubuntu refugee.

I haven't actually tested this as I'm at work right now and brought in my laptop, where I had it connected to a monitor while at home. When I turned on the laptop without the external monitor, it was running fine at the appropriate resolution. What I believe is happening is that I do not have an entry in the xorg.conf file for the HDMI connection, so it defaults to the 1024 settings on both the external monitor as well as the screen for the laptop. Which is what it looks like you set up in the xorg.conf file that you have posted there.

I'm having another problem now as well however.... when I checked the log file after booting up at work it appears that it's trying to use my internal trackpad that's on my ASUS laptop as if it where the trackball that I'm using at home which was connected externally with a USB cord. Should I post a new thread with this, or could someone help me out here quick? Please & thank you for any information!

From your Xorg.0.log:
Quote:
[ 79.665] (II) config/udev: Adding input device ImPS/2 Logitech Wheel Mouse (/dev/input/event8)
[ 79.672] (II) No input driver/identifier specified (ignoring)
This says that you internal trackpad is being detected as a Logitech Wheel Mouse.
Something to try is to edit /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.conf and uncomment the line:
Quote:
#options psmouse proto=imps

Still doing the same thing. It is able to move right and left somewhat, but it's WAY too sensitive, and up and down doesn't work at all.

I also want to add that the mouse was working fine before I starting messing with the xorg file to get the monitor working. Is there a way I can delete all the settings in X that I may have changed? I've tried X -config multiple times, as well as xorgsetup, but neither have got it working again.

Apparently there is a new option to the psmouse kernel module to address the detection of the Elantech touchpad. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...01#post9175201

Try editing /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.conf and add the line:
Code:
options psmouse force_elantech=1
