Slackware + Radeon Vega = heartache (how to force X to a different driver?)

So my shiny new laptop has a Radeon Vega 8 video chipset. Slackware 14.2 won't load (because it doesn't recognize the hard drive) so, I'm forced to use Current.

Current loads the amdgpu drivers but they fail on X startup (no screens found). I saw the thread on amdgpu-pro (https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...ro-4175620876/) and I tried bassmadrigal 's slackbuild but it fails because Current's kernel is too new.

So, it looks like I'm forced to use the generic VESA X driver.

Can anyone tell me how to force xconfig to configure for VESA (or another generic driver). (I don't need 3D)

Hi, I don't know about amdgpu-pro but for the opensource driver the kernel in current is too old. You need at least 4.15 for vega because it needs the new display code in there. I'd try the latest stable kernel first.

Yeah, I was afraid of that...

If I blacklist amdgpu and the ati drivers, will xorgconfig default to VESA?

I read that the 4.15.x kernel had a major amount of new code specifically for AMD... so much so, that it outstrips the performance of AMD/ATi's driver. That might be a worthwhile investment in time for you. It wouldn't take more than a couple hours to install a 4.15.x kernel even if you had to "make oldconfig" to get from 4.14.x to 4.15.x and you can always keep your current kernel as a failsafe.

You should use the latest kernel possible for Raven Ridge which is now 4.17.
You should also check if there's any UEFI/bios updates.
If you still have problems to start X then post the log.

Try using the modesetting driver with EGL enabled as a temporary measure.
