Slackware plays mpg, avi, wmv, mpeg without installing extra codecs. Is this right?

Hi,

I just stopped using Windows XP. And wanted to try Slackware.

I thought playing video files would be hard to setup because of codecs.

But, after a fresh install I have the program Noatun and played the following media file types using it:
- avi
- mpg
- wmv
- mpeg

I had assumed after a fresh install that the last thing this computer would be able to play are those media files.

So this means I don't need to install mplayercodecs or anything. It means that a standard install of Slackware 12 installs whatever is needed to play those media files.

Does this make sense? I thought it would be more difficult.

Thank you.

That's correct.

Pat V. sets out to build a stable, usable Linux, which the end user has full control over. He's not a free/free fanatic, and so he doesn't mind including software that can read "proprietary" or "pseudo-proprietary" or "contains trademarked material" or "somebody might someday invoke their right to collect license fees from this, even though they've shown no interest in doing so up to this point and likely never will" file formats.

if you want to play other media types or a dvd you'll have to install other software eventually. i'd recommend the mplayer package from alien
(btw, it's a good player for windows as well )
also get http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slac...playerplug-in/ , so you can play videos in your browser (at least in firefox)
