slackware packages won't download

What's wrong with the Slackware website? I can't download any packages. I'm trying to download the xorg-server package 1.6.2 for slackware-current but none of the http or ftp links work.

http://packages.slackware.it/package...6.2-i486-1.txz

"slackware.it" is not "the" Slackware site.

Maybe you should ask the folks at http://www.slackware.it/ what's wrong...
It seems to me the links are incorrect, as they are pointing to ".../xorg-server-1.6.2-i486-1.txz.tgz"

Links from slackware.com work: xorg

Oh nevermind. Looks like I'm getting in over my head. -current uses txz files and I'm not supposed to mix those up with 12.2.

I need a newer xorg-server than the one used in 12.2 because a bug in it messes up quake-engine games. What's a good alternative to Slackware until 13 comes out? I tried Debian but it really got on my nerves. Too much stuff didn't have a debian package and then I couldn't just install in normal, I had to install it the "debian" way and trick it into thinking it was a debian package.

niels.horn 07-19-2009 03:14 PM

.txz files are packages in the newer format, compatible only with Slackware 13.0 (or the -current branch of Slackware).

To use them, you need the latest pkgtools package.

But do not mix packages from -current with 12.2-stable - you're bound to encounter trouble...

Here is some explanation of .txz

Yeah I read that already. I think I edited my last post while you guys were replying to my old one. Sorry, my fault.

niels.horn 07-19-2009 03:27 PM

ok, maybe you can give us some more details about your problems with xorg-server and your video driver.
But then that might be better in a new thread :)

icecubeflower 07-19-2009 03:33 PM

Nah, you don't want to read about that. Old news:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-games-685573/

I just need an OS that doesn't use xorg-server-1.4

niels.horn 07-19-2009 03:36 PM

Patience my friend, Slackware 13.0 is just around the corner :)

You might try a fresh install of Slackware 13.0-RC1 to check if it solves your problems.

icecubeflower 07-19-2009 03:38 PM

Does the RC-1 version install easy like a stable version? Like I can just burn 3 CD's and install it like normal?

And... exactly how unstable is it? Would I even notice?

niels.horn 07-19-2009 03:41 PM

I am using -current and it is very stable.

You can use the script from Alien_Bob to create the CDs and install it as if it were a normal release without problems.

icecubeflower 07-19-2009 03:48 PM

Script? Alien Bob? Wah, it's not easy enough. I just wanna download iso's.

niels.horn 07-19-2009 03:57 PM

Well, there are unofficial iso's here from -current... (DVD btw)

Use the script, point it to a local mirror. It'll be much faster...............you might even learn something this way.
