slackware not booting a gui
 

Hi, i have a 233 mhz 64 meg frankenstein-beast from a few years back. After countless attempts to get one of the many linuxes working on the dual hard drive system(1.55 and 1.09 gig), i tried Slackware and to my surprise, it almost worked.
What i have is a computer that says it has kde, gnome, and x installed but it ends up with some kind of problem(it wont tell me exactly what) in a big box made of *s at which point it tells me to hit control-d to login as a single user or to enter the root password.
When i hit ctrl-d, it reboots and when i login as root, it tells me that it is read only and i can not change anything. I want to use kde but i want to be able to switch from one to another to learn which is best.
I do not mind reinstalling the os, i have done it four times before, each time trying something different but getting the same result. I have a 64 meg swap on hda and hdb, a 100 meg boot on hda1, and i use the remaining space on hda for root and space on hdb for /usr/local. Any help would be appreciated.

are you getting disk errors? if you have a bad sector, it could be asking you to boot in single user mode, remount the root partition as read-only, then do fsck and check for disk errors. mine usually says to do e2fsck, i think. not sure about the difference ... but I know the root partition must be mounted readonly or you could screw it up running fsck. maybe try reformatting and reinstalling, checking for bad blocks (if all else fails)?

And I don't know about you, but I only have 36 mb of data in /usr/local ... if your setup is anything like mine, you may have a misallocation of space.
try df if you ever get to a command prompt to see how much space is available.

did you change runtime to 4 and did you do a wmconfig as well as you have to be logged in and to be sure that you have enough space on hd and also maybe 64 mb swap is a little low

my slack did that too. i went into the single user mode and ran "fsck" manually. it asked me if i wanted to fix a bunch of blocks and stuff. i said yes to all of them and then i rebooted and got right in.

how did you get into single user mode? please excuse me, im a newb...Thanks!
