slackware next release
 

Howdy folks, when do you guys think the next version of Slackware will be released? I'm planning to upgrade my OS (running 9.1 right now) soon and I don't want to miss a new version by a few days.

Going from the gaps between the last few versions, 9.1-10.0, 8.1-9.1, etc are around 9 months apart. And point upgrades (10.0-10.1) are around 6 to 7 months. So... either Slackware 10.2 will be released sometime in August, or Slackware 11 will be released in November.

Anybody hear such news from Pat? Slackware is most likely going to be a 10.2 or 11?

The usual answer to this question is..."When it's ready!"

Based on Pat's comments on the ChangeLog, the next release will be 10.2. As AxeZ has already said, it will be released "when it's ready."

Pat has been very active in the last couple of weeks bring everything up to date, which is usually a sign of impending release.
I expect that he will wait to see if the latest sysvinit fix is ok.

We are probably stuck with the default 2.4 kernel for now as Hans Reiser is still disagreeing with the kernel maintainers, which may stop ReiserFS4 merging into the 2.6

I guess Pat is planning to release 10.2 soon. Slackware store has added Slackware Linux, 10.2 (Pre-Order) as well as Slack Sub start w/ 10.2 (Pre-order) .

I see that slack-current uses 2.4.31 as default and I assume slack 10.2 will use that as default. If one successfully installs 2.6x, would the slack10.1 or later upgrade packages continue to work under the new kernel?

Pat has had 2.6 kernels in /testing for a long time, but with a warning about using the 2.6 kernel headers.
Many people here use 2.6 kernels, the main issues are with alsa and wireless networking. You just need to be a bit more careful with updates.

Sounds like good news. Thanks again for the update on progress. I'm hoping Slackware 10.2 will be released within a week or two so I can have a system up and running a few weeks before school starts.

Slackware 10.2 beta was up recently... how long do these things usually last (or is it another one of those "when it's ready" :))? Can I be a part of it?
