Right. So slackpkg tool is very much like apt-get update/dist-upgrade or pacman -Syu which I can totally get my head round

The builds system will take me a while to get used to. I just tried it out now with bluefish, seems quite straight forward, but how do you know what dependencies do you need, will sbopkg tell you as it processes the build queue or will it not get that far?

Cheers

You have to read the README file. This will tell you all required dependencies that are not included with Slack. And a requirement for that program to be on Slackbuilds, is all those dependencies have to be available as a slackbuild as well.

As far as something more automatic, AFAIK, they don't really have anything except for a few user generated ones here.

OK. I'll play with the package system a bit until I get my head around it.

A big thank you for all who posted replies, I'm sure I'll be back with more inane and pointless questions until I find my feet

Cheers

If you have any queue files yourself you can send them to Chess and I'm sure he'll add them to the repository. I've submitted a few as they only take a few minutes to write, but can be hugely useful

Once I get Slack 13.0 installed on my laptop and start getting packages going, I will have to look into doing that.

But alas, I won't be doing that until I find a house, because my desktop is packed up and I need to back up my hard drive before I wipe and reinstall.
