I agree with everything slackhack has written, he's clearly talking sense based on experience. At the time of writing, 50% think the new logo is ugly or close to, 74% don't generally like it, 26% do. I admire Alien Bob's determined rearguard actions but the fact remains that a large proportion of the user base don't like it.

While I accept Xavier's point in part, I'd like to return to the previous situation where we didn't have disagreements about logos. If I may repeat my view, I consider it amateurish in appearance, its employment a profound error of judgement and frankly embarrassing. The sooner it is dispensed with the better, for all the sensible business, brand and marketing reasons adduced in this and other threads.

I'm not aware that anyone has heard from PV in regard to this subject, but if he is reading these threads or if I had his ear as some here surely do, I'd advise him to listen to his customer base, gracefully admit that "slamwars" was a mistake and then either reinstate the old logo, or if a new one is required, give slackhack or someone like him a call for advice.

And as Adriv says, the fact that so many of us are banging on about this apparently trivial subject is testament to the excellence of Slackware - apart from the logo that is.

While the issue itself is of very little importance to me (indeed, I didn't even know about the new logo until I saw the topics on the boards), my personal opinion would have to be that the logo is just horrendous.

It looks like the kind of thing you would find on a $5 T-shirt at a souvenir stand. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the genesis for it. Pat was taking some time off this summer, saw one of these flipped logos on the boardwalk, and paid an artist that does them exclusively (was anyone else even aware there was a market for this?) to do one for Slack.

Which would have been all well and good if it was just a joke or a one-off thing, but I can't fathom the thought process that brought him to this point. The original Slackware logo was incredibly classy and simplistic, which says a lot in the modern Linux arena. It really meant something, because just like the distribution itself, the logo was still the same elegant design it has been for years; it wasn't caught up in the mad rush to make Linux something the trendy 20-somethings can identify with. Leave that to Ubuntu and it's zoo full of release names. Ah well.

I would like to respectfully ask how you could substantiate such a claim?

Did you ever stop to think that *perhaps* the largest portion of Slackware's user base are not members of this site?

Embarrassing to who exactly?

Do you have a Slackware sticker on your car? Do you own any Slackware merchandise? Do you own anything with the new logo on it? And if so, have people made derogatory comments about it?

Of course, you do realise that the new logo was designed by a professional, right?

One thing's for sure, if I was PV, right now I'd be saying "stuff 'em, it's staying right where it is..."

If sales were to fall drastically, then it'd be different. Who cares if it's just the freeloaders that are making all this noise?

Did slack come out with an EULA that requires every user to tattoo the logo on their forehead or what is the buzz all about?
With all the distros I used the tattoo (erm: logo) was my smallest concern.

Eric
Alien Bob, sorry if i offend you. This was not my intention.

I like the Slackware distro so much and i just said that i didn't like the logo. I didn't say that the distro is bad !!!

I think that the logo is very important for any product.

Here, the already-strong slackware name ID is preserved, but instead of detracting from it by having "linux" in the same typewriter font, the word "slackware" now stands out more and is in fact *underscored* by the strong block underneath..
That's pretty cool, I like it.

So far, I think nearly every logo submitted is better than the current Slackware logo.

EDIT: Hmm, shouldn't you have posted this in the other thread ?

Is that a quote from Steve Ballmer? Certainly not the sort of thing I'd expect from a user of GNU/Linux.

So do I.

Nice work slackhack, with both your logo design and with the insightful post that accompanied it.

But none of them have any near as much character.

Why does everyone seem to think that Slackware has to have a boring logo???

I don't.

Slackware's 'character' is simple and elegant. The old logo reflected this. I never found the old one boring in any way.

In contrast, the new logo's character is contorted and for the most part unintelligible.

It reads 'slackware' if you look at it while doing a one armed handstand while squinting with one eye through a pair of 40% tinted glasses at 11pm on the night of a 1/4 moon with a 20% cloud covering at a latitude somewhere close to Edinborough! The rest of the time it reads 'slamwars'.

I do like the old logo, but I'm not against changing it for something else.

It's just that I really, really, hate this particular logo. As I said previously in one of these threads, I think the designer of this logo did incredibly well to make any sort of ambigram at all out of the letters in 'Slackware'. I just feel that the sequence of letters doesn't lend itself well to the task and he'd never get it to look right no matter how hard he tried.

At the end of the day, this is just my personal opinion and doesn't count for much. I just wanted to address the point you raised about people being opposed to any new/interesting logo at all. I honestly don't think that's the case.

Sorry, but there's absolutely nothing exciting about the new logo, nope, nothing at all. The only excitement I can think of was the shot of adrenaline I got when I first saw it, thinking to myself "Holy s*** wtf is that ?!?!?". Yes, that was the only excitement I got from it, and it was a one time thing.

Noone here thinks Slackware has to have a boring logo. The consensus here
seems to be that Slackware should have a good logo. And definitely not the one this new slackwars linux distribution is using.

It's amazing how much this new logo is being disapproved of. Still about 50% of the voters completely dislike it. Add the "So,so" voters right now and you have 75% against it. Now that should be clear.
