Slackware minimal system
 

Hi,friends.

I know that there's an actual question about Slackware minimal installation.

I've read a number of articles about it, one of most famous to my mind is here.

I have my own list of packages to install, to have a core system. And I'd like to share it with you. Maybe it will be useful for anybody.

I have installed in my VPS slackware 13 minimal. And i needed two days to make it work perfect. Minimal Slackware have about 300 MB and the full DVD has on install 5.7 GB with all you need :) I recomend using the 5.7 GB slackware if you want to start your services in the same day :)

yup, I also had about 300 MB of disk space used. But 5.7 GB is too much for a server use, to my mind :)

Minimal system – Slackware jukebox
 

As I understand a minimal system it’s a collection of the packages allowing to run the machine. In the case of Slackware the minimal system would be the subset of A series. I never tested which packages are essential to run Slackware.

The other thing is a minimal system for concrete purposes. Here I’d like to present you my minimal system for Slackware-based jukebox playing MP3 files.

● A series – all packages except for:
kernel-huge-smp:ADD
kernel-modules-smp:ADD

● AP series – six packages:
alsa-utils:REC

● D series – one package:

Additionally I installed moc (music on console) from SlackBuilds.org.

I use:
moc – to play music
seejpeg – to see the album covers
mc – to browse the collection
nfs – to upload the collection

For a VPS 5.7 GB is too much but i have installed in my HP on a 200 GB partition the full 5.7 GB slackware 13.1 and even installed from DVD i still had some problems to start mysql/httpd .
Anyway i search for a minimal slackware to install it instead of my 5.7 GB slackware (i know that i can make it minimal using advanced setup but i want it installed on remote servers and i cant download all the time 4GB of dvd iso.)
I have found slackware minimal that can be installed with openvz but i need an ISO file to burn it since i cant create my virtual machines with a tar.gz files (or i can ?).

I'm glad to announce a new "version" of 13.37 Slackware core system.

Of course picking up necessary packages and making new tagfiles is thousand times easier than developing the system, nevertheless I hope that my frugal routine work will be helpful to somebody. :hattip:

You'll be surprised you can run Slackware with so few things.

Why do you think I'll be surprised? :) I know that Slackware can run with less packages that I picked. And my needs may differ from yours or someone elses's. It's just that components which I use and I shared the tagfiles, because they can be useful for somebody.

Lexsus45, what components do you use? Same question for nobodino.

Do server administration interfaces like webmin, phpMyadm require the Xlibraries? I have been googling this ques. without much success. I want to put (DHCP, Bind, for Ddns Server), Apache, MySQL, PhP, Perl, Python, mail server, firewall, AV in one box. Thanks
