Did you need help or anything? Don't really see a question in your post? But I would definitely be checking your logs for any type of resolution to why apps aren't working all of a sudden.

Did Xine play all media types, then stop with some? Can you be more detailed? How did you install Xine, was it from Dropline, a .tgz, or a source package? What do you mean by your modem cannot be opened?

h1tman: you can check your log files in /var/log. Just use the handy less and tail commands to view them. You can also get information about the kernel messages generated at boot time, by typing dmesg at the command line. For more information try man dmesg.

As far as getting your modem working again, check the logs then try hitting the forum with the details, perhaps it's not as bad as it seems.

Some of the packages that swaret install are sometimes older than the ones you currently have. This happened with 3 packages to me, of which include sed, and 2 others.

This could be a reason of unstability, or why your OS suddenly is not working as stable as it should do...

Also, /me points at mplayer, as an alternative to xine ;) just download the tgz from linuxpackages. ;)
