slackware in vmware 5 screen resolution of 1400x 1050

Hello folks,

Together with your help I was able to install slackware 5 onto vmware 5 (the issue was scsi emulation). But now I'm facing another problem.

I'm having problems to set the resolution of X to 1400x1050 (=optimal resolution of my laptop screen).

I was able to install vmtools (with some tricks for creating rc0.d to rc6.d, found on this forum).

In the vmtools setup I wasn't able to choose 1400x1050 resolution, but something close to it, like 1392x1037 (I don't know the values by heart).

Result:
- mouse works fine
- screen is screwed up (I'm getting weird horizontal lines like interlacing, and double/triple screens overlapping)

I tried setting 1400x1050 manually in xorg.conf, but I still get the same issue.

For the record, setting the resolution at 1024x768 works fine.

Is there something I am missing?

Do you have required drivers installed?

But it's a virtual machine. So didn't the vmtools install the necessary drivers? It's using a virtual graphics card (VMWare SVGA I believe).

In real Slackware you should install normal drivers for your card to get high resolution. Maybe this virtual graphics card doesn't support such resolution at all.

Ok I found the solution. I'm posting it in case someone ever has the same problem.

The drivers installed by vmware tools are good. But the modeline for 1400x1050 was missing in xorg.conf. So after adding the following it worked fine:

ModeLine "1400x1050" 100 1400 1500 1600 1700 1050 1100 1200 1300
