The Acer C720 has a standard Intel Haswell CPU, and you can run whatever distro you want on it. There are a number of ways to do this. My preference is to use a micro USB flash drive, and install Linux on it. You can boot from a USB drive or SD card by pressing Ctrl-L at boot time. You do have to enable developer mode, but it's not hard to do. This way, you can boot ChromeOS by pressing Ctrl-D if that's what you want, or Linux, as you choose. You can also reformat and install it to the internal SSD if you prefer. There are some chromebooks with ARM CPUs, but the Acer isn't one of them.
