I would be curious of the average age of Slackers. Another poll is how many years of using Slackware. And for statisticians, what kind of overlaps possibly exists between the two results.

There was a poll several years ago (with 360 votes) that covered this. Although, I imagine with it being almost 6 years old, many of us would've shifted into a different age bracket than what we voted for in that poll.
I'm not sure if I remember of any polls on how long you've been using Slackware...
I have PhD degree in forest ecology and have published some articles mainly in Persian language. I use Slackware as my main OS to get my job done. My workflow with Slackware mainly consists of statistical analysis and image processing with programs like R, Mstat (runs in dosbox), pspp, google earth, saga gis, etc. I also use Mendeley desktop as my library archiver and reference manager.
PS: Living in middle east I'm a die hard metal fan but my favourite bands are from Scandinavian countries.
Similar to other posts, I used Slackware for its Latex capabilities. I have two masters degrees and my ability to crank out papers in APA format without much effort saved me a lot of time. The bibtex database saved me lots of time as well. I would never write an academic paper in anything but Latex. I'm looking forward to the next version of Slackware which apparently has a TexLive built in.??

One of my favorite bands is Scandinavian... Nightwish. They're from Finland and are considered in the "Symphonic Metal" genre. My favorite song of theirs is Beauty of the Beast.

Such a great album! I have almost all their albums, but this song has stood out to me as my favorite. However, I do love showing people Master Passion Greed, because how often to you expect to hear a muted trumpet in a heavy rock song? And then their Imaginaerum album with the Imaginaerum movie was pretty awesome too!

As far as unusual instruments in metal go, the song that always jumps to my mind is "Äidin Laulu" by Kauan - a Russian doom metal/post rock band who sing in Finnish. That is the only metal song I've ever heard with an oboe solo, and it works really well.
As for Imaginaerum, that album is a total, undiluted composite masterwork. A magical world of musical dreams and nightmares. It's so well done.
Apologies for the OT posts, all. Having said that, if anyone wants any academic metal articles, there are a tonne of them here.

Freshly 60. Slackware user since 1996-1997; I'd give you that in years but it's too complicated for my old brain.
