for firefox the patch on this page :https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/rev/36f4ba2fb6f5 is more complete. It seems to work for me with glibc-2.28 and rust-1.29.0.
nota: same patch works for thunderbird.

Built SFS using Slackware_from_Scratch cloned from git 2018-09-06

Only two problems showed up:
1) Oprofile had to be built before llvm.

2) It reboots and shuts down properly, but on logout there is
only a blank screen. I'm not sure where to look for this
problem.

The base system was SW14.2+ installed 2018-09-10.

If only I could afford that new 32 core Ryzen processor.

I was looking at that, but the 16 core Ryzen Threadripper 2950X has a higher clock speed and actually gets a better Passmark rating.

2/ you built SFS current with 4.4.153 kernel? Could you try build with 4.14.70 kernel?

Ryzen Threadripper sales just went through the roof. If they would only address the spectre nonsense. I was ready to build new system and then spectre hit.

Maybe I'm out of the loop, but what haven't they addressed? According to their security page, it seems everything that is affected has some way of mitigating it.

Or were you thinking more of releasing CPUs that aren't affected by Spectre? If that's the case, it requires time for them to redesign the architecture to prevent it. AMD has reported that Zen 2 will do this, but that isn't estimated to be released until 2019. I don't know if Intel has announced when they'll have hardware mitigation in their processors.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I'm still tying to figure out how to afford the 8 core Threadripper.

Considered how long it took to build this time, I cheated and built a 4.14.70 kernel on the
present system. It cured the problem. Thanks!

Waiting for the patching to be in the hardware. I am not confident in following multiple threads / websites to be sure I'm patched.
Sorry but I won't buy known faulty hardware.
perhaps you could provide a step by step for i5-3570K, because the best i am seeing with 4.18.9 and latest 14.2 updates is
Code:
dmesg | grep -i microcode
[ 0.000000] microcode: microcode updated early to revision 0x20, date = 2018-04-10
[ 3.938976] microcode: sig=0x306a9, pf=0x2, revision=0x20
[ 3.939659] microcode: Microcode Update Driver: v2.2.
thanks for the reply
guess I will wait for next year.
john

No manufacturer has addressed these issues in hardware yet. The only thing I'm aware of that is on the horizon is Zen 2, which is estimated to be a 2019 release... I haven't read any estimates on when Intel will have this addressed in hardware.

But it also seems that Intel has been hit a *lot* harder than AMD with this (especially being the only one susceptible to Meltdown and more variants of Spectre than AMD).

How to handle this with future hardware purchases is difficult, but with the way things have been handled so far, I'm not disappointed with purchasing my Ryzen 7 CPU...

I haven't kept up with mitigation, especially with Intel, as most of my computers run AMD. I do know that Intel processors require some hoops to jump through to update their microcode, usually (or only?) adding it to an initrd, whereas AMD is able to push new updates through kernel firmware. The best I can recommend is make sure you're using the latest intel-mircocode package available on SBo and hopefully Intel keeps your CPU updated against the latest attacks.
