slackware freezes at boot with USB devices

Hey, im using slackware 10.0, and each time when i boot if there is a usb device plugged in it just freezes at boot time, ive have this problem with slackware 9 & 9.1.
& now when i plug in my usb modem after the system has booted the box freezes.
Any ideas? hotplugging is enabled if that help.
Cheers

is the USB device by any chance a hard drive?
check your /etc/rc.d/rc.modules file and make sure that your usb lines are correct.
also what is the device(s) in particular that are plugged into your USB? Is it a USB hub with other stuff daisy chained to it? details details details

it was a usb modem, zyxel 600 series, but this is not specific to this device, i also have a usb scanner that worked under mandrake but also caused a freeze at boot.

I don't know if this will really help....BUT....try starting up the machine withOUT the device plugged in. As root, open /etc/rc.d/rc.modules in your favorite text editor and look at the usb section. There are quite a few drivers. There are about 3 generic usb drivers and a host of others for specific devices like scanners, cameras, hard drives, modems, etc. Make sure you have the usb-ohci driver and the appropriate modem driver loading.

You may have already done this, but it doesn't hurt to check.
