Smile Slackware for Science

Hi all,
Just out of interest really, how many of you use Slack for scientific computing? If so, what's your area, what do you use, etc?

I'll start. I am in to Machine Learning and Computer Vision. I use mostly C++, Python(with the obvious science stack) and Matlab.

Have a nice day!

I use it for bioinformatics. SOme time ago I made a meta SlackBuilds queue file that would build everything connected to biology and chemistry from SBo:

Nice! I have been meaning to do that with my rather large stack! Could save a lot of time.

I also use Slackware for bioinformatics, data mining, biostatistics e.t.c.

Don't know how scientific it is but I use Slackware for creating maps (with GMT) and GIS.

I use Slackware for material science, machine vision, and data mining.

Sometimes I use octave (open source MATLAB clone) and sometimes my own perl-based calculator because I prefer perl for function implementation http://ciar.org/ttk/codecloset/calc/

I also use BRLCAD, Lucy (which is a Lucene clone implemented in C, with perl bindings), and custom software written in C, perl, and python.

I do math professionally and comp sci for fun, and Slackware meets all of my needs. Speaking of a perfect fusion of math and CS, what other distro has Common Lisp in the base install? And further, the development toolchain is to die for, and all my favorite math toys are here ( SBO): LaTeX, R, gnuplot, kmplot, gtklife, xaos, ...

For my research in psychology/medicine I use R for quantitative analyses and graphing, LaTeX for writing (with knitr to bring in the R code), and MAXQDA for qualitative analyses (which I unfortunately have to virtualise in a Win7 VBox). But even there R plays a part by grabbing data out of a MySQL database and spitting out a format that MAXQDA can understand (for automatic coding). Probably there are qualitative packages for Linux that are decent, but I haven't looked into it yet. Ahh and LibreOffice Calc for inputting and storing data (to feed to R).

I had a 10-inch EEEpc running slackware 13.1 that I did all my University stuff on. Matlab / C / Latex and what not.

Since graduating I've done all my embedded c/c++ work on slackware boxes as well

I'm in solid state physics, and have been working (almost) exclusively on slackware since v 3.6. Besides office work and smaller calculations I mostly do multi-particle simulations with home-brewed software

Have fun

Nice! All good stuff!

If anybody is interested in Deep Learning, I'm planning on writing SlackBuilds for Caffe and its dependencies. Of course it's when I get the time.

Greetings fellow scientists and Science lovers. I'm retired and don't do much serious Science anymore but try to keep abreast of what's happening around me. To that end I visit

Physics Forum

rather a lot because of the amazingly fertile combination of high numbers of college students and extremely gifted pros in so many fields. You are all graciously invited to check it out to see if you will love it, too.

WoW, how interesting

I use a hybrid between Slackware and Xubuntu...

I'm in machine learning, statistics, neural networks, etc.

For my experiments, I recollect data with Xubuntu, from a single kinect, and an array of kinects with simpleopenni and processing (somehow I can't manage Slackware to use simpleopenni) in my laptop. And I have Slackware in my desktop, to analyze the data recollected using R and Latex for writing the reports.

Greetings.
