slackware current : xfce splash screen hangs xorg

I have a clean install slackware using slackware current disc from

xorg will crash when started up using startx after "Simple" screen have been selected.

This only happens for normal user, doesn't happen as root.

Something wrong with file permission of "Simple" splash screen?

I tried XFCE once when using Slackware 10.2. I don't remember if it worked as root, but as a user it would freeze on the splash screen. The problem was that my laptop has an ATI graphics chip, IGP320 to be precise. If I edited Xorg.conf and changed it to the vesa driver it would work.

I would expect XFCE would've fixed that issue by now, but maybe it'll give you some ideas.
