Slackware -current / Swaret

Whoa! Slackware -current looks scary

Here I thought Pat was slacking in the truest sense of the word only to find that he's been a busy little bee the last few months

Few questions here.

1. Has anyone used swaret to upgrade to -current? If so, how'd that go? Any tips?

2. I noticed that X11 has been broken up into a million little pieces because it's modular now, how does a swaret user go about upgrading X11? I mean, swaret will only find upgrades to packages you have installed and since I have the "old" X11 packages installed, swaret won't recognize the new modular X packages as being upgrades.

3. Is it possible to install Beryl on these new X packages?

4. I see that gcc* has been upgraded to 4.1.2 so I know I will have to compile a new kernel in order to get my Nvidia driver and Truecrypt module installed. What else would I generally need to be concerned with after upgrading gcc*?

5. If I rsync /dev/hda to /dev/hdb then upgrade the Slack install on /dev/hda to -current only to find something wrong with the upgrade, will I be able to rsync /dev/hdb back to /dev/hda without any problems such as symlinks and such?

5. Anything else I need to know or be warned about before upgrading to -current?

Thanks,

LocoMojo

What I did was make another partition an install current to that.

I use slapt-get myself, but I imagine the situation would be similar with swaret.

As you assumed, it will not handle the changes in the X disk set automatically. The best bet is to remove all of the x11-* packages (which the CHANGES_AND_HINTS file goes over) and then install everything from X. I don't know about swaret, but slapt-get has an --install-set option, so I just needed to do "slapt-get --install-set x" and it downloaded and installed all the new packages.

The same is true for the "bin" package. That has been split up into many smaller packages now, and swaret is only going to know how to update the single package. You need to read the CHANGES_AND_HINTS to see what has been split out, and if they are things you want to install.
