I just installed slack current. I have an EVGA 8400 GS (1024MB) video card. Right now I'm using the nouveau driver for now. When I ran the ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-340.98.run it gave my errors about the X server not having abi support and to down grade the x server . anyone else have this issue.. I mean do i really need to downgrade X and or use another lower numbered kernel????
Unfortunately, Nvidia hasn't updated their 304 and 340 drivers to support Xorg 1.19. Until that happens, you're stuck with either nouveau or going back to 14.2 (as that has Xorg 1.18).
Misery loves company, this has been my results as well. I'm using NVS 3100 with legacy-340 nvidia. So far all I could do was roll back X. I rolled back mesa too was that also necessary?
I had been using the nVidia 304 driver on one system, but this change caused me to switch to using the nouveau driver.
Overall I am satisfied, as it saves doing the kernel patch, compile and nVidia driver rebuild sequence required since the 4.4 series kernel.
I found that I needed to downgrade the OpenGL setting in KDE from 2.0 to 1.2 to avoid some screen corruption.
I also had to build a new xorg.conf to support the dual monitor setup.
My only complaint is that the nouveau driver seems to fail to properly reset the GPU when reverting from a dual monitor setup to a single monitor setup. On the first boot, the screen remains black when X is started, requiring switching to a console (Ctrl+Alt+F6) and logging in blind as root to run 'shutdown -r now' to recover.
You're using a legacy tesla card so you should probably just use nouveau where you will get some support. You can further improve your situation by building mesa from the git master and using a recent kernel.
