I have an issue of wifi interface going down and being unable to get it back up without a restart. I checked official intel website about drivers and for linux they suggest to contact distro vendor.

Problem is that interface randomly gets down sometimes just after starting wpa_supplicant, sometimes it lasts few days without any issues. It's more likely to go down on heavy network load.

So when it gets down I try two of the following commands and I get pretty much same error

SIOCSIFFLAGS: Input/output error

I tried googling, but havent found exact same issue covered, but there was similar problems with same errors.

It's something wrong about this firmware and as I've read it was solved with firmware update. So I guess this firmware needs to be updated, because people had similar issues with it in past. Sorry I havent saved whole 'dmesg | grep wifi" output. I will do that when it happens again there was something about bad firmware. But it was something very similar to what's here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=144039 about microcode error

Should I compile different kernel manually or drivers or unsure what to do, never faced similar issue.

If it is just needing an updated firmware, you can grab the latest firmware package from Slackware-current and install it. It is updated to match the kernel's official firmware repo as of the end of June.

However, if you need a newer driver to properly interact with that updated firmware, you would likely need a newer kernel as well. If you're using an up-to-date -current live version, then that already includes kernel 4.9.38 and if it needs something newer, you'd likely need to venture into the 4.11 or 4.12 kernels (4.10 is EOL). I don't know how easy this would be with using the live version...

I forgot to mention that with 14.2 there's totally no problems with this exact hardware. Anyway isn't this latest firmware package already included in slacklive ? I mean it's -current just with some additions from alienBOB, do I still need to manually install it ?

EDIT: Seems like it's kernel needs to be changed...

It depends on how recently you updated the Slackware Live install. There are updates to -current quite frequently, with the latest being yesterday. And the day before that saw a kernel upgrade (although, it was just to 4.9.38). If you've updated since the end of June, you should have the latest kernel firmware that Pat has available for Slackware, but that could be out of date from kernel.org's repo.

I also forgot to mention that I installed slacklive and I use it normally I mean I update it every time I boot it and by googling this I've found very similar issue solved by changing kernel

So I'm now trying to find a way to use secondary kernel while keeping actual -current kernel and allowing all upgrades for it. I used several kernels in past, I don't think it will be an issue, just I forgot how to actually do that, but I'm working on it. I'm just unsure how 14.2 kernel would work with all other -current stuff I guess I'll go trial and error way it's not like kernels takes too much space. If I'll manage to solve it that way I'll update this thread.

So I'm now trying to find a way to use secondary kernel while keeping actual -current kernel and allowing all upgrades for it. I used several kernels in past, I don't think it will be an issue, just I forgot how to actually do that, but I'm working on it. I'm just unsure how 14.2 kernel would work with all other -current stuff I guess I'll go trial and error way it's not like kernels takes too much space. If I'll manage to solve it that way I'll update this thread.
Ok, so if you installed Slackware Live, then you are no longer really running Slackware Live, but rather Slackware with Plasma 5 :)

I say that because updating and installing kernels is much different on an installed Slackware vs a live version. What I would probably recommend is using 55020's updated kernels. He has a script that will automatically build the latest kernels once they're released by kernel.org. He has 4.4 kernels for 14.2, 4.9 kernels for -current, and 4.12 kernels to run the latest and greatest. You might need to run the 4.12 kernel to see if they've fixed it in the newest kernel.

I would recommend using installpkg on these kernels rather than upgradepkg and then manually edit your bootloader (lilo by default) to add the new kernel. I would keep your existing kernel entry in place... just in case something goes wrong with the newer kernel.

Oh that link is nice. I manually compiled and installed 4.12.2 to see how it goes. Not sure if I've said that but I've had no issues with 14.2 4.4 kernel, but I'm not sure how well it would work with all other current stuff so I installed 4.12.2 first and faced no issue yet, but I'll add 4.4 kernel too just to see how it goes. I want to keep all of them for selecting on boot that's what I have now 4.9.?? (from -current) and 4.12.2 because it was latest stable last I checked. Thanks for help. I just need to test this for a few days to see if that random wifi crash happens again if no I'll edit this thread as solved.
