Slackware-current 17-JAN-2016 HPLIP fails to set up printers
 

I've got this error today:
with hplip-3.15.11 on Slackware-current-beta 17-JAN-2016 new install with my HP Officejet Pro 8620 (no plugin) and HP Laserjet Professional M1212nf (plugin needed). Also, hp-setup can't find the ppd files either. This all worked flawlessly with hplip-3.15.11 in an earlier current (since late November, I think) install on another laptop.

Running "hp-plugin" created the correct /var/lib/hp/hplip.state file but did not download any plugins since no printers where installed. Adding the Officejet via CUPS worked, but it does not show up in the hplip applet since the device URI was socket:/<ip address>. Changing to hp:/net/HP_Officejet_Pro_8620?ip=<ip address> allowed the HP device Manager applet to correctly display the printer. Edit: remembered "hp-makeuri <ip address>" to get correct device URI. Both printers now work.

I am not sure what has changed. At this point I have the Officejet working but not the Laserjet. Weird.

TL;DR summary:
1. Install printers via hp-setup GUI fails.
2. Run "hp-makeuri <ip address>"
3. CUPS localhost:631 to install local printer with above URI.
4. refresh HP Device Manager applet.

Advice, insights welcomed.

I've been running into the same error since early December with an HP Envy 5530 over wireless with -current. I thought it was something I did wrong along the way. Same symptoms, used to work now I get the same error. I want to try your method but can't get to the offending pc & printer until next week.

I have a similar error here, on a fresh slackware-current 17Jan2016, trying to install HP OfficeJet 4500, which is a wireless printer

I manage to install when connected via USB, but when I disconnect the cable and start the wireless setup I get this error:

It is not recognizing the cups' ppd file

I googled for hours with no luck.

I've tried the Laserjet M1212nf now in Slackware64-current; same errors as in Slackware-current (and same as roberto967) EXCEPT now hp-setup offered to automatically download and install the plugin. Whacky. Its been so long since I've had issues with HPLIP/CUPS, that I can't think where to start looking - it has always "just worked" with various versions in 14.0/14.1. Now it seems to ignore the manually selected ppd. I have a laptop, where it wasn't a problem, that was set up with and earlier Current and upgraded through slackpkg since November - originally hplip-3.15.9 back then. I think I will try 3.15.11 on 14.1 and see what happens.

So far I was able to reproduce the above problem on current and 14.1 with hplip-3.15.9 and -3.15.11. In all cases, the hp-setup GUI fails to automatically find the ppd and, if then manually selected, fails to set up the print queue. The work around is to use CUPS web interface and hp-makeuri to set up the printers. Once set up, subsequent package upgrades are ok. Something appears to be screwy with 3.15.x or some required dependency.

the newest version so far that works as expected is hplip-3.14.6. All tests were performed using:
HP Laserjet Professional M1212nf MFP (plugin required) - wired network
HP Officejet Pro 8620 (no plugin required) - wifi network
HP Photosmart 8250 (no plugin required) - USB

Update:
hplip-3.15.7 fails to install printers on current
hplip-3.14.10 succeeds in installing printers on current

thats how it was with a driver on the aur .

good thing I didnt let go since I still use it sure there had to be record of it somewhere

I just updated to 14.2-current-03-Feb-2016. On 3 systems (1 full install, 2 updates), and on 14.1, I still can't get hplip-3.15.11 to install any printers. Going through http://localhost:631/admin CUPS interface works as long as you specify the correct URI using "hp-makeuri" command ad not one of the socket:/, ipp:/ etc. The URI needs to be "hp:/net/..." or hp:/net/..." (network or USB connection, respectively) in order to show up in the HPLIP Status tray icon and HP Device Manager GUIs.

I'm sifting through the hplip bug list and will file a report upstream. Since hplip-3.14.10 works as expected, I don't expect this to be a Slackware issue.

With the release of Slackware-14.2, I can confirm that hplip-3.16.5 HP Device Manager will now properly scan for, find, and set up my two HP printers. This includes automatically download/install of any required plug-ins. Thank you Slackware devs and support team!
