slackware.com/forum - what's up?

Hello LQ/Slackware,
While LQ indeed looks like a helpful, active, overall excellent help forum, as a new Linux/Slackware user, I'm interested in finding out about the "official" forum supposedly at slackware.com/forum/ - but for weeks I've got only "permission denied" errors. I get no response from anyone@slackware. Anyone know what is up with this?
Thanks,
Rick

From what I gather, this IS the "official" slack forum now.

At least that's what I've read somewhere, somehow.

kill me if I'm wrong :-D

That may well be, and it would be fine with me, but on slackware.com they refer to their own forum (e.g. general faq #6 at www.slackware.com/faq/do_faq.php?faq=general#6). Remnants are also to be found on Google. Again, LQ looks like a great site, but I'm trying to clarify if an "official" slackware.com site still exists. Thanks.

slackware.com/forum has been down for probably about 2 years or so now. This place, userlocal as mentioned above, and linuxpackages.net also have forums. You may have noticed on the top level Slackware page here:

Forum Sponsor: Slackware Linux, Inc.

2 years, huh? Apparently website upkeep is not a priority. I hope the careless does not extend to the software. Anyway, thanks to all for the input.

The forum was taken down intentionally.

I figured that was the case. What I meant by "upkeep" was that it would be helpful to update the references to the forum so as to point to the proper place, and not keep people guessing.

Were linked off Slackware, both on the main pages he links too and also from store.slackware.com

We are the official forum for Slackware. Patrick himself is a registered member of LQ.org...

(and meeting him in LWE San Francisco 2003 was a blast.. and damnit, I'm never ebay'ing or selling the small Slackware screwdriver that he gave me... or the bumper sticker either... ;) )

The official SW forum was shut down in the post
9-11 security paranoia wave, when some WinDoze
cracks and some other strange things were posted.
They were having a few problems with their new
owners at the time anyways, and were likely glad
of the excuse to cut costs.

Trickykid, I’m glad you’re able to clarify that you believe LQ is the “official” forum site. Thank you. But, you write: "Were linked off Slackware, both on the main pages he links too and also from store.slackware.com" I don't want to belabor this, but unless I’m blind, you’re wrong. The only references I found to a forum definitely imply that the forum is on the Slackware site - like the broken link cited above, and this quote from the Book: “available at the website is the Slackware Forum...a very popular and helpful resource, and should probably be your first stop for support." So next time you talk to Patrick you might ask him to make it “official.”
That said, I’m glad to have found LQ. Thanks again for the responses.

Well off this page were the first link: http://www.slackware.com/links/

Patrick necessarily doesn't use the words official, I'm not sure, but ask him. He doesn't refer to any other forums though. And the book, my god, I think that thing was last updated and written when 3.5 version was the latest version.. clearly showing it hasn't been updated since they removed their forums, which was probably at least 2 years ago.. hmmm..

It does appear the store has changed and the link that was there is no longer there..

I really don't care if some say its official or not, we got the go ahead from Patrick himself to create this forum, that's why its here. I don't need anything else beyond that to be the best Slackware forum out there.

Regards.

>>>He doesn't refer to any other forums though.
???? Other than Slackware.com/forum/. I’m surely not the only newbie caused grief by the broken FAQ link and other clear indications that there is a forum where there is no forum. 2 years? Enough time. Patrick, if you’re that busy, I’ll happily update your pages for you.

That said, I’m happy for LQ, and grateful to be here. Thank you for the clarification. Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

Seriously, I'm not trying get on your case but first of all, your the first person I've seen or seen asked about the old Slack forum's on www.slackware.com and make such a big deal cause they are no longer there.

Second, I think your making too big of a deal regarding them, calm down and realize there are many other places to get help. If your so inclined to have him update to reflect that the Slack forums are no longer on that site, email him yourself really and see what he says about it.

Patrick is a busy person I assume, he is really the only person who creates such a great distribution of Linux. I think the last thing he's worried about is going thru and updating a few small links...

Oh well.. I'm happy your happy with LQ.

Regards.
