Slackware as Webserver

Hi,

I am thinking about using Slackware as a webserver, primarily for myself and a few friends. I was wondering if anyone could give me a few hints and suggestions.

I am looking for some kind of DNS Server tool, Apache / PHP / CPanel etc.

Anything basically to run a small webserver, with big webserver capabilities.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Dan

Install apache and php (if you haven't allready).

Configure apache in /etc/apache/httpd.conf ,and enable the php module in that same config file.

If you're box is direct connected to the internet configure IPtables. (secure your box)
If it is behind a router don't forget to forward packets on port 80 to your slackware server

If you want your website to be reachable on for example www.nukey.nl register a domain and forward DNS to your own IP.
There are also a few free websites that offer services to map a domain-name to your IP (dyndns.org for example ), but it's always nicer to have a real domain to own. Costs me 12 Euro a year.

What do you mean by DNS Server tool, you won't need that if you're just running a webserver.

I've got domain names, I just want to be able to point them to my servers. Such as Name Server things.

Does this help anymore?

PS. Thanks for the other information.

Then forward your domain name to your IP.

My domain name provider lets me adjust the IP for my domain. Yours not ?

You want to host your own DNS-server? Then you must have a static IP-adress (or it must not change often), and you must have a slave server aswell. DNS can be difficult to set up if you don't know how it works.

So, you have domain names. Can you administrate DNS at your webhost, or can you only change the DNS servers?

www.zoneedit.com is a nice service if you don't have any DNS servers for your domain, and you want easy DNS administration.

It all sounds too complex for my small mind. I'll forward the IP (www.namecheap.com is my provider), and set up "name servers" on there. Sounds easier

Thanks for all the help!

I don't like zoneedit.com. I have a group that's hosting their site on my server, and they had enormous trouble convincing their changes to propagate with zoneedit.com.

I now suggest that people use http://everydns.net/ instead. It's a whole lot easier to use.

My ip changes so i point my adress to an no-ip adress and use duc (the linux version).
The duc updates the no-ip adress if my ip would change.
Now my ip almost never change but better safe then sorry.
