Slackware (any) on a Cobalt RaQ4

I've recently acquired a RaQ4 and have little interest in leaving it as-is, especially due to the known bugs and hacks that make it unusable in a production environment.

I've been searching the web for most of the business day and have found quite a few links on the subject, but every one 404's on me.

Has anyone managed to get a Slackware install on one of these boxes, or perhaps be able to provide a working link to a HowTo or walkthrough?

Much obliged!

Sorry to ask this question in return, but didn't SUN Microsystem bought over this Cobalt company ? And why do you want to install it with another Linux ?

And from what I've gathered, they still have the Raq4 software posted on their download site ... and to my understanding, it's a stripped down Linux kernel.

If you want to install another distro, I think the front panel IP configuration needs to be incorporated into the O/S. And it's web-based configure.

Sorry to be a bit long winded but there are some work to be done if you want to install with another Linux distro.

I have no problem doing some work -- everything I've learned from linux I've learned from Slackware

I do believe they were bought out by Sun, but I'm looking at this not just as an opportunity to utilize a small, compact server, but also as a way to enhance my own knowledge of Slackware. Trying to get it to work on 'alternative' architecture is quite a challenge, but one I know people have done successfully before.

From what I understand, there were some security holes in the Cobalt RaQ4 software that were not patched by the time the company stopped updating, which is why this server is not viable in a datacenter rack for public use; I'd like to try my hand at getting something I'm more used to installed, and being able to secure it as I'd like.

That's a great initiative. You're right, the Raq4 had security issues with the Linux kernel at that time, and the last time I was playing around with it .. it was still using 2.2.x kernel.

Good luck

Let us know how it turned out.

After more research I find that the majority of Slack links out there (again, all broken) on the RaQ4 suggested that it could be done with Slackware 8.0 -- is there any chance of something more recent having worked? I doubt anything in the neighborhood of the 2.6.x kernel tree would work, but I do remember hearing that there were upgrades to the 2.4.x system fairly easily...
