lol... after messing around A LOT (tried compiling three newer kernels and did quite a good job at f*cking up my system) i tried raising the "surround" volume control instead of "master"... guess what :P

"master" doesn't seem to do anything...

i'm still picking up a little distortion in the higher frequency ranges though does this have something to do with the sound chip? i know onboard sound isn't exactly the way to go for good sound quality, but i can't afford an Audigy right now

I have via8233 also, i installed drivers and they isntalled find after downloading the kernel source. I can unmute and adjust volumes etc but when i load up KDE i still get the same error message about how it tried to set it to 48000hz and only got 32000hz and that it will continue with null output.
