Slackware and thinking for oneself for the win
Well, I don't know if any of you guys remember me, but I post every so often with my issues. I don't have one right now, but I just wanted to say how satisfied I am right at this moment.
I usually install Slack 10.2 with the included 2.4.31 kernel, then follow the general idea of Shilo's thread until everything is working. I never get there, I usually fudge it all up and start over. Either way Linux has frustrated and intruiged me to the point I dream about things to fix on it in the morning. Today however I decided to try the test26.s kernel, the install went fine and I had a 2.6.13 based Slack install. But nothing would work. There was libraries missing for 2.6. I looked in the folder and there was one for 2.4.31, but none for 2.6.13. Where could they be? I rushed to the forums here to ask, but I thought I should try myself. I found a few tgz's on Slack CD2, so I thought why not install them, my systems not working so nothing could break.
Bingo. It worked. I get access the internet, and I have my ALSA configured. I even installed the source so I can compile my kernel in a few days, so I dont have to download a new one!
So yeah, I just wanted to say that I have got my system working (well not yet, but I know the rest of it all by heart now). It does what I want it to right now. I appriciate MS and them making their OS's easy to install, but Linux is much better, it is really MY computer now.
Cheers LQ, and thanks for your help up till today. I'm going to have a cup of tea now and install Samba.
Hamish
PS: Anyone installed Linux on a VAIO before? I just bought a TX series and want Linux on it but I don't want to bugger up a perfectly new system!

Linux is far easier to install than Windows - try installing Windows XP, then try installing SUSE 10. You'll see the difference

I couldn't agree more. It is very satisfying to get through a Slackware installation and have everything working just as you want it, even if it did take you a few hours to work out. IMO it's well worth the trouble.
I have installed Linux on a VAIO, and I find that the best (or rather, easiest) distro to install on them is SUSE. It brings an inbuilt VAIO configuration tool within YaST2, made specifically to sort out the problems with Sony VAIOs. If you want Linux on your VAIO, I highly recommend SUSE - easier to setup, and it is one of the best distros out there.. Or, you could set yourself another challenge and install Slack or Gentoo on it
Happy Slacking!

I installed Slack on a vaio, had to uninstall arts sound or kde frozed at loading. I left alsa and then reinstalled arts after i upgraded kernel and patches and then i compiled sonypi http://www.popies.net/sonypi/ everything works 100% had to tweak several things, but works even better than ubuntu, plus the speed is amazing, about 35% faster than ubuntu with custom kernel. You have to work it a bit, but it's really worth it. Gl

reinstalling slackware
Reinstalling Slackware is also very easy if you put in order some things in advance, like a separate partition for your install and another one for your data (at least these). I can reinstall everything in about 30 min. In fact, I actually did it and my brother didn't even notice it! (we share our home pc). No problem with drivers, like Windoze. Custom kernel. Ah, by the way, my Lexmark Z602 (reputed to be a WinPrinter) does not work in WinME but does in Slack 10.2, using the driver from www.lexmark.com... My uncle's old Epson C42 doesn't even need any drivers in Slack. .
Slackware rocks and rules!
