i've got the same problem a few weeks ago...my solution was very BASILAR but it works...just do a backup of your databases and the download the last tgz from linuxpackages.net...i don't know why, but after i did this my mysqld began to answer to the connections, even after several reboots

either way is working. whether u put --user=mysql when running safe_mysqld or u chmod'ed /var/lib/mysql with chown -R mysql.mysql /var/lib/mysql
