slackware 9 fonts buggy?

I upgraded from slackware 8.1 to 9.0.

After a somewhat arduous upgrade, I noticed that some fonts in gaim and mozilla dont display quite properly. Some letters are bolded when they're not supposed to be. I think this might be a global problem.

Anyone else having a similar problem?

I'm using Blackbox 0.65 and Xfree86 4.3.

hi

yes I upgraded from 8.1 to 9.0 and I got the same problem and I nerver really fixed it so I installed 9.0 via 8.1 ISO-cd. I recommend that you install this way or from 9.0 ISO.

I think Slack 9.0 has a different kind of fontsystem and I noted that the 9.0 installation made some font-configuring...

baah.. sorry for my bad english.

I had the same problem but not after I installed dropline, the dropline xfree86 packages seem to be the ones that fixed my fonts.

I checked out Aussie's mentioning of dropline gnome's fonts fixing the problem, but wanted to fix the problem without having to install all of dropline.

I uninstalled the freetype package that came with slack 9 and downloaded and installed freetype2 off dropline's sf page here

This did not have any noticeable effect so I downloaded and installed cabextract and webfonts, which are MicroSoft's free TrueType fonts, off dropline's sf page.

After restarting X I noticed the old fonts were gone and replaced with the new M$ fonts, which were generally larger in size, yet consistant in nature.

Feeling somewhat cheating by using the large, less linux-like, M$ fonts, I decided to uninstall the cabextract and webfonts packages to revert back to the original fonts for the time being. However, the M$ fonts continued to prevail after restarting X and rebooting.

Not knowing what to do, I reinstalled the cabextract and webfonts .tgz packages and have been trying to "cope" with the unusual fonts.

Alas, I feel the haunting of evil M$ software returning from this run-in with these interminable fonts. Ph33r.

Any ideas/answers welcome.
