Slackware 9.0 rc 1 / Evolution 1.2

There have been a number of comments regarding how to fix installation problems with Evolution in Slack. However, the question I still have is: which distribution version should be downloaded from Ximian? They've got a version for RedHat, SuSe, Mandrake, etc, but nothing for Slackware. I'm a novice when it comes to Linux so sorry if this is a really basic question, but any suggestions/recommendations on what I ought to do to get Evolution up and running would be welcome.

First I suggest you get the slack package from here
(scroll all the way down)

And then it depends on which gnome libraries you have installed.
I have slack 8.1 and needed to upgrade/install these:

- gal 0.21
- gdk-pixbuf 0.19.0
- gtkhtml 1.1.6
- soup 0.7.4

Did you install gnome with slack 9? Is it still the old version?
You need some of the old gnome libraries to run evolution.

I'm gonna install slack 9 on friday or saturday and I will also try to get evolution working. I'll be sure to share my findings.

How does 9rc1 run btw?

Clarification

HC, thanks for your reply. I realize that my original question may not have been clear. To rephrase: Which copy of Evolution 1.2 should I download from Ximian if I want to install it under Slackware 9.0rc1? Ximian does not appear to offer a version of Evolution for Slack, however based on other postings I've seen here it appears that it is possible to install Evolution under Slack as long as you make a couple of small mods. Again, any pointers you might have would be much appreciated.

As for your questions about gnome, all I can say is that I did a full install of Slack v9.0 I went to www.linuxiso.org to download the image file, burned it to CD, then just went through the installation procedure. Whatever gnome packages were part of that got installed.

Overall the installation went well, although I needed to redo it about 10 times before I got it right. I blame this on my own incomptence more than anything else. The main problem area for me was with the step asking if you wanted to create a boot disk -- no matter how many floppies I tried it just didn't work so I just skipped it, finished the installation, and created the boot disk afterwards. Now that the installation is done, I will say that v9.0 is *really* impressive. I am very happy with it and would recommend giving it a try. -- JW

Well I dunno about installing one intended for another distro.

But that package I mentioned is a version intended specifically for slackware. It's just not an official ximian thing because they don't support slackware. I have it running right now and it's great.

That package is easily installed with 'installpkg' in slack (once you have the right libraries of course).

I checked the slackware site and rc1 comes with gnome 2.2 so I think you'll need to install the old gnome 1.4 libraries to get evolution working (for any copy you may download). This is a list I got from the dropline forums (dropline gnome is gnome tailored for slackware...if you like gnome it's a kewl thing!). The maintainer says these should do the trick:

bonobo-1.0.20-i386-1.tgz
bonobo-conf-0.14-i386-1.tgz
gal-0.19.2-i386-1.tgz
gal-0.21-i386-1.tgz (from www.sf.net/projects/dropline-gnome)
gconf-1.0.9-i386-1.tgz
gnome-libs-1.4.1.7-i386-1.tgz
gnome-print-0.36-i386-1.tgz
gnome-vfs-1.0.5-i386-2.tgz
imlib-1.9.14-i386-1.tgz
libghttp-1.0.9-i386-1.tgz
libglade-0.17-i386-1.tgz
libole2-0.2.4-i386-1.tgz
libxml-1.8.17-i386-1.tgz (Slackware's "l" directory")
oaf-0.6.10-i386-1.tgz

(I guess you can grab these from www.linuxpackages.net)

To run evolution 1.2 you'll also need these:

gdk-pixbuf 0.19.0
gtkhtml 1.1.6
soup 0.7.4

I really recommend you grab the slack package, that should work fine.

Hope this helps.

...just a lil update on my post up there:

I did it exactly like that (install those libraries I mentioned) and then the evolution package (all with installpkg) and it worked perfectly.
