Slackware 9.0 Nvidia FX 5200
 

When i upgraded my graphics card to an Nvidia FX 5200, I can run the install for slackware 9.0 but when the installation is done and my computer reboots back in slack, i get nothing but a blank screen. What do i have to do in order to get something, at least a prompt. Thanks so much for the help.

You may not have installed a necessary package. Remember, Slackware doesnt check dependancies.

If Slackware installed alright, then the generic drivers should work, so its probobly not your video card, because you should at least be able to get the CLI with it.

Try installling everything if your not sure what package you're missing, and see if Slackware works then.

Well, then please post more details. There are a thousand possibilites with the info you gave us.

Try running a newer version of KNOPPIX on the machine, and if it boots/runs fine, then you know the drivers support is there.

Che, I also am running an Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 video card. Slackware 9 installed fine on my system (AMD 1700+, nForce motherboard, with 768 RAM). It worked good using the generic drivers that come with 9.0. I then upgraded to the latest nvidia drivers for 3d support and everything looks good. What kind of 5200 card do you have? Maybe its the card?

I have an asylum nvidia GeForce FX 5200. I have an nforce 2 motherboard with athlon xp 2000+ and 1024 RAM.

ok d00d its machine dependant when these problems occur, the nvidia drivers are a pain in the ass if they dont work the first time....so look in your /var/log/xfree86.0.log file and look for lines beginning with (EE) which points out an error, and post it...also make sure you have assign irq to vga in your bios, and you could even try setting in the /etc/X11/XF86Config file ->
Option "NvAgp" "1" to override agpgart...
but look in that log file first..

Che, im using the same Asylum GeForce FX 52000. You got the AGP version right? Using the newest nvidia-4364 drivers and they installed without a problem. Maybe its your card? Could it be bad? Your system doesnt differ that much from mine so it should have worked. When logged in as root into X11, try deleting XF86Config and if you use KDE have kXconfig build a new one for you after you input the proper information. That has worked for me also.

Actually, che is correct. RH 9.0 fails with both default video drivers as well as the Generic VESA driver AND the Generic NVidia FX driver...tried them all. I do not use slackware so this has nothing to so with the problem. The problem is a missing driver or driver than cannot handle the card. Just FYI before egos get out of control here...
