Slackware 9.0 destroyed my computer?

Hi, this may sound stupid but yesterday a friend called me to fix a computer and install Linux :) - so i quickly:

Code:

# shutdown -h 0;
it succesfully just halted but didn't turn off. after i came home the computer turned on but just the lights and the fan. nothing was booting, not even the bios! i checked for every cable that could possibly be disconnected but no luck... does anyone know if i messed my computer? if i did... how can i fix my computer :confused: -- i never had this problem before.

It's a hardware problem; nothing to do with Slackware or the way you shutdown your system. The reason your system didn't turn off automatically was probably because the APM module wasn't loaded.

Check that all the cables in your case are secure. If it still doesn't work then atleast one of your pieces of hardware is shot -- try powering up without the hard disk plugged in, try swapping out RAM, etc.

Did you try the computer to another monitor? cause it can be the monitor that's not working since it's not showing up the bios.

If your not getting the beeps that are given after post, it sounds like the CPU fried out. Is the CPU fan still working?

If a ram stick isn't in all of the way, nothing will happen - at all. I did that once when swapping a video card, I knocked a piece of ram just a little bit out and thought I wrecked the computer.

I'm not sure if this is what is happening to you, but I had a similar problem with the PC shutting down but not switching itself off, but I could still press reset and the box would boot normally.

To fix it, I had to open /etc/rc.d/rc.modules and uncomment this line:

# /sbin/modprobe apm

and restart.

Yes, the fan isnt spinning, first the hardrive makes a sound and then the floppy will respond right after, the COMPAQ logo will come right after... thanks guys because the last time i used the computer i shutdown slackware to go to my friend's house ... so yeah the fan doesnt spin... i dissambled the computer 3 times!!! and no luck... this computer is ~5 years old so... i guess the CPU is shot :mad:
