If your system is configured to boot a CD and you think the CD should boot properly then take a look at Smart Boot Manager.

http://btmgr.sourceforge.net

It can be installed to a floppy disk and booted. It will offer the option of booting the CD.

What type of CD did you burn the iso image to?

Check the md5sum on the iso. Compare it with the one provided on slackware ftp servers.

There have been many posts regarding this problem since the release of Slack 8.1 was available. I asked what type of media was being used because of the wide availablity of CDRW media. CDRW's takes longer for a drive to mount it and the BIOS might not wait long enough. But if you used CDR media then it shouldn't of have been the problem.

Slack 8.1 does use a new boot system. The older El Torrito 2.88 floppy emulation was restricted on disk space and would not hold the kernel and the root image like before. The BIOS in many systems just may not support it. Smart Boot manager has been the solution for many.

Perhaps with 9.0 they will figure out where the compatibility problems are and get the booting problems resolved.

It is also interesting to note that I haven't seen a post where the purchased silver CD set fails to boot. Every system I have boots the silver CD and the burned CDR images just fine, or doesn't support boot CD's at all. I can't even find one system that the boot fails to even work with it. Even an old Dell OptiPlex P-II/350 boots them OK. I also have an old Pentium 166 that boots the CDR OK. Perhaps somebody will come up with a solution for the problem. Or at least identify what the problem is.

The boot iso (675 MB) doesn't fit on a 74 min 650 MB CD-R, but the burner program might not tell you that anything went wrong. If you have one, burn it onto a 80 min 700 MB CD-R and try that one.
