Slackware 14 with KDE minimal install
Wassup People?
For the past while I have been distro hopping to get a nice bare system. And I have stumbled on Slackware which I pretty much very like. However I can not just get KDE with out all of the unneeded dependencies. I have looked online to find minimal install guides and they also end with the system unable to boot into KDE saying something about a missing dependency. I know that happens when you start to take stuff away and stuff, but I really just want X wifi KDE and what ever Slackware needs to run - no VI, CUPS, or another thing that is unneeded. Just what is needed. Anyone think that they can help me out? |
Regarding KDE, there are couple of current threads that might help.

Here on slackware64-current with KDE running without apps I get a total system usage of 676MB of RAM. That includes all the crap that everyone hates (namely akonadi) and I also have named and apcupsd running which not everyone else would have. |

The reason I wanted it to be a very basic install was because I only have an old 40GB hard drive laying around, and I do a lot of office work with it, so I don't want to run out of space - I also like minimal RAM usage, hence my tries with Arch and now Slackware. |
With a HD that size you probably don't want KDE. Xfce or Fluxbox would probably be better (but not as fancy). A Slackware installation with everything except KDE and KDEi installed occupies 13GB on my system.
ETA This includes a large number of SlackBuild packages like LibreOffice. |

I'm writing these lines on a nicely trimmed-down KDE 4.8.5 on Slackware64 14.0.
Here's the almost finished HOWTO (in french): https://github.com/kikinovak/howtos/...kstation-HOWTO And here are various files and scripts needed for the setup: https://github.com/kikinovak/worksta...ee/master/14.0 |

On top of that, three SalixOS packages replace stock Slackware packages: kde-baseapps-lite (without Konqueror), KMix and K3B (enhanced). I decided to go for the Salix packages on top of the existing Slackware packages, because the Salix folks care about 100% compatibility with the "mother" distribution and do some very clean work. |

I have Slackware 14 with kde and a full install plus many addon's on 4 different computers the average memory usage on the 4 is about 300 megs at idle. The full install takes about 7.2 gigs of disk space for me. One of these is a 64 bit the other 3 are 32 bit.
