Slackware 14 bluetooth and X issues

Hi all,

I got a problem on a fresh install of Slackware 14. I have a Lenovo s205 and my bluetooth doesn't get detected.

My wireless module is
Code:

03:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)
the module ath9k is loaded, along with bluetooth module

Code:

root@pulsar:~# lsmod | egrep "ath|blue"
bluetooth            132835  10 bnep,rfcomm
ath9k                  76483  0
ath9k_common            1526  1 ath9k
ath9k_hw              335026  2 ath9k_common,ath9k
ath                    11983  3 ath9k_hw,ath9k_common,ath9k
mac80211              202703  1 ath9k
cfg80211              145277  3 mac80211,ath,ath9k
rfkill                12432  7 cfg80211,ideapad_laptop,acer_wmi,bluetooth

The wifi works just fine, but bluetooth doesn't even exist

Code:

root@pulsar:~# hciconfig -a
root@pulsar:~# hcitool dev
Devices:

This used to work just fine in 13.37. I saw a thread with the exactly the same issue, but it got sorted out by a miracle and it doesn't seem to be working for me. On my desktop the bluetooth gets detected, but I can't send files, because obex server crashes.

The other thing is the X. When I close the lid to suspend the computer, sometimes X crashes on me. The primary suspect was the amd proprietary driver, but the backtrace doesn't point at it, but directly the X. Unfortunately I can't find the exact trace ATM... Ah, I just generated an X crash. Here's the backtrace

syslog contains

Code:

but that's some generic message, could be caused by anything...

Does any of you have similar problems? Any ides? I greatly appreciate any advice!

Ok so after a while I've got some time on my hands, so I could install slackware 14 and 13.37 side by side on this IdeaPad S205 and dig a little deeper in the bluetooth not working issue.

The outcome is rather amazing - the device itself (VID:PID) doesn't even show up in 14.0. But let's start at the beginning

Let's compare the outputs:
1. rfkill list 13.37:
Code:

0: ideapad_wlan: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: yes
        Hard blocked: no
1: ideapad_bluetooth: Bluetooth
        Soft blocked: yes
        Hard blocked: no
2: ideapad_killsw: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: yes
        Hard blocked: no
3: acer-wireless: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: yes
        Hard blocked: no
4: phy0: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: yes
        Hard blocked: yes

2. rfkill list 14.0
Code:

0: ideapad_wlan: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no
1: ideapad_bluetooth: Bluetooth
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no
2: phy0: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no

You may notice some lines are missing in 14.0

3. lsusb 13.37
Code:

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 5986:0292 Acer, Inc
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0bda:0139 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 15a4:1336 Afatech Technologies, Inc. SDHC/MicroSD/MMC/MS/M2/CF/XD Flash Card Reader

4.lsusb 14.0
Code:

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 15a4:1336 Afatech Technologies, Inc. SDHC/MicroSD/MMC/MS/M2/CF/XD Flash Card Reader
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 5986:0292 Acer, Inc
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0bda:0139 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Card reader

No difference can be observed in the output
But after doing rfkill unblock all on 13.37, lsusb changes to:
Code:

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 5986:0292 Acer, Inc
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0bda:0139 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 15a4:1336 Afatech Technologies, Inc. SDHC/MicroSD/MMC/MS/M2/CF/XD Flash Card Reader
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0489:e00d Foxconn / Hon Hai

and miraculously, the bluetooth adapter appears as 0489:e00d!

Now why won't it work in 14.0??? Is there anyone who could guide me where to start looking for the missing usb adapter? Please, it's driving me nuts!

Guys, the problem is solved. At first it seemed strange no one is experiencing the same issue. Now I know it usually means "the problem is you".

I updated BIOS, and TA DA! Bluetooth is back! I hope the X crashing will also be cured by this! Hopefully this helps someone

0rphu 02-27-2013 03:29 AM

Unfortunately the X crash issue remained after the BIOS update, but it was cured by current's recent X update. No more X crashing when putting the laptop to sleep by closing the lid. Just in case someone had the same problem, which seems unlikely, since I'm the only person talking to myself in this thread :D
