Slackware 14 !

From current log :

Mon Jun 25 05:17:48 UTC 2012
a/aaa_base-14.0-i486-1.txz: Upgraded.
Bumped slackware-version to 14.0.
Added top level /run directory.

Is this a new release ? The www.slackware.com page says nothing !
Oh dear - getting beyond myself. I forgot that we normally have a whole pile of release candidates first.

cikrak 06-25-2012 05:15 AM

No :) aaa_base --> to sets up empty directory tree for Slackware (plus welcoming e-mail from Pat to root's mailbox). Just 'preparation' for a new release.

This is not a new release - just an update in one file in a package. Release candidates are going first. Still plenty of time to prepare.
Basically this is confirmation of the next release version number.

I hope the new release will not come too soon, we are still missing things like GIMP 2.8 and XFCE 4.10.

chrisretusn 06-25-2012 06:43 AM

NOT! There was already a related thread Massive updates in -current). It will not happen until it happens.

I'm agree with you...though in bussines way, fast and often releases will 'generate' more income/money to Slackware Inc.But I know it's not Slackware's philosophy.

If Slackware 14 does not include Gimp 2.8, but does include the dependencies needed for me to easily upgrade to Gimp 2.8, then I'll be just as happy as if it does include Gimp 2.8.

What would be the point not to upgrade to 2.8 if the dependencies are already in the distro? Is it that worse than 2.6?

Anyone having problems mounting a windows share after applying the latest slackware64-current patches. Never had a problem with CIFS before and now I get nothing.

When I run smbclient -L server I can see the share...

shotsy@workstation:~/Desktop$ smbclient -L server
Enter shotsy's password:
Domain=[WORKGROUP] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.6.3]

Sharename Type Comment
--------- ---- -------
storage Disk Server Storage
IPC$ IPC IPC Service (Linux Server)
Brother-HL-2070N-series Printer Brother HL-2070N series
Domain=[WORKGROUP] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.6.3]

Server Comment
--------- -------
BRN_867402
GWEN-PC
SERVER Linux Server
WORKSTATION workstation

Workgroup Master
--------- -------
WORKGROUP SERVER
shotsy@workstation:~/Desktop$

But when I try and mount it via the fstab or via the cmd line I get nothing mounted. No errors in dmesg either.

FSTAB entry

//server/storage /storage cifs username=shotsy,password=fakepassword 0 0

and from the command line

mount -t cifs //server/storage -o username=shotsy,password=fakepassword /storage

It works fine under windows and the Hackintosh. not sure why it quit working this morning other than the upgrade to cifs-utils-5.5-x86_64-2.txz.

CIFS support is compiled into my currently running kernel 3.3.4 as well?

Upgrade to the latest slackware-current batch which has a recompiled and patched cifs-utils package.

No problems here on -current 64 bit with the new 3.2.21 kernel.

Edit: Too late.

Talk about fast service, worked like a champ!!! Now is there any way we can get XFCE 4.10, Gimp 2.8 and the font packages rebuilt to support lcd pannels, check this link
http://duganchen.ca/writings/slackware/fonts/

Thanks Eric!

I believe our next targets will be the gtk+2 and gimp stuff that Robby's been testing. As far as optimizing LCD font display, I believe the Microsoft patents still prevent that so you'll have to make those changes yourself. I mean, don't do that, but if you do I take no responsibility for your actions. :)
