Hopefully, that i915.ko kernel driver goes with the kernel you're using. If in doubt, you can build it into the kernel. Latest 3.10 kernel is 3.10.63, anyway, with lots of improvements over the 3.10.17 that you're using. And if you're not using 3.10.17, it might explain why it can't find the module! If in doubt about a module, maybe typing "depmod -A" and then "modprobe i915" will straighten things out.

I never knew what those Xorg douchebags were talking about when griping about the i915 module being missing. There's also an i915 DRI module, located at /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/i915_dri.so...in case it makes a difference. It appears to be part of the mesa package.

Also, "no screens found" can be deceptive sometimes. It could mean that you have to define your monitor in xorg.conf.

I also have Intel integrated graphic. I am curious about agpgart. This is output of my lsmod
Code:
i915 33280 2
drm 74408 3 i915
intel_agp 29116 1
agpgart 32584 3 drm,intel_agp
video 20624 0
output 6656 1 video
maybe these modules agpgart, drm, intel_agp are not working properly.

Something you may want to try, if you haven't, is remove (or rename) /etc/X11/xorg.conf; it hasn't been needed for a couple or three releases. Also, get and apply the Xorg patches (and all the other patches too) if you haven't already done so.

You're running 14.1 which does not need xorg.conf (there is a file, xorg.conf-vesa in the directory but I don't believe it's actually used). Rename Xorg.conf to Xorg.conf.bak or something. Do this in console then startx. Might even need to reboot but I don't think so.

My systems (a couple of Dell Dimension 8400s and a couple of Dell Optiplex 780s) all have Intel graphics chips, the Optiplex:
Code:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
and work just fine (the display is an H-P 20-odd inch LED, sharp as a tack).

Changing the BIOS setting for graphic memory most likely did the trick.

Can't hurt, might help.

Hope this helps some.

That has allowed the OP to run VESA graphics at a higher resolution.

I believe that there is likely to be be better performance if the OP uses the 'intel' driver. The problem has been the failure to load the i915.ko module. I would like to know if the OP can load the i915.ko module if the 'acpi=off' option is used as a hardware quirk has been reported.

This is correct. They are only used if they end in .conf, so you if wanted to run vesa, you'd remove the -vesa from the file and then xorg would use it.
