Slackware-14.1/x86_64: Swap Caps Lock/Control Keys on Console.

On my Dell Latitude E5410 the upgrade from 13.37 to 14.0 (now running 14.1) caused ~/.keymap file to fail on login: permissions errors. ~/.Xmodmap works when I start the X Window System.

The current ~/.keymap file contains:
keymaps 0-2,4-6,8-9,12
keycode 58 = Control
keycode 29 = Caps_Lock

This same file works on the desktop. On the Dell it works when root logs in but not when I log in as a user.

I've searched the Web without finding a solution for my system; there are ones for Debian/Ubuntu and Arch, but the files they modify don't exist here.

I'd appreciate some ideas on how to get a working key swap on the consoles of my laptop.

TIA,

Rich

I always add "ctrl.map" to /etc/rc.d/rc.keymap. Mine looks like this:

Code:
#!/bin/sh
# Load the keyboard map. More maps are in /usr/share/kbd/keymaps.
if [ -x /usr/bin/loadkeys ]; then
 /usr/bin/loadkeys us.map unicode.map ctrl.map
fi

Surely if you log in as root it shouldn't load anything from ~/, are you sure you didn't put it in /root?

Stephen,

Well, yes. When I log in as root loadkeys works just fine. There's the same command in root's .bash_profile as in my user .bash_profile. And, loadkeys works just fine on other hosts.
