Slackware 14.1 vs. proprietary NVidia drivers (+ Thunderbird Lightning plugin)

Hi,

A few days ago, I migrated a client's Windows XP desktop to Slackware. I started with 14.1, but at some point I encountered a showstopper. The video card in the PC is a GeForce 7300. I downloaded the corresponding driver on nvidia.com (304.88), but unfortunately it wouldn't build on Slackware 14.1. I didn't want to tell the client to replace the video card, so I wiped everyting and simply installed Slackware 14.0 (with an almost identical set of applications). This time the 304.88 driver built perfectly.

Now I'm considering upgrading my workhorse PC from Slackware64 14.0 to 14.1. The video card in this PC is also an NVidia, but more recent: a GT 520.

What are your experiences with proprietary NVidia drivers for recent cards on Slackware 14.1?

On a side note: I'm using the Lightning plugin, and I want to know if there are any troubles with the version of Thunderbird that ships with Slackware 14.1. I'm relying on this application, and in the past, there have been situations where I had to jump through burning loops to be able to use it.

Cheers,

Niki

Niki, I believe the latest 304 legacy sources are 304.116. I would not be surprised if 304.88 won't build against 14.1.

I'm not using 14.1 (yet), but I have 304.116 installed on two 14.0 systems. Reference the last several posts in this thread:

Also, is the 304.xx series required for a GeForce 7300? Or can you use the latest series? I have 6150 and have to use 304.xx.

No, I didn't. I usually just grab the tarball from nvidia.com and try to install it. Though I think I know why it didn't build.

I guess I found the culprit. I was on the french NVidia site, and apparently the information wasn't up to date. Well, could have saved me a lot of trouble.
