slackware 14.1 stalls on shutdown

I successfully installed 14.1 when it came out and everything seemed to work fine. Now, after being away a couple of months, it hangs on shutdown --right after the root filesystem is remounted. I have to do a hard shutdown with the power switch to turn everything off.

Also, perhaps this is related, udev does not seem to recognize my usb dvd/cdrom writer.

What method are you using to shut it down?

If you are using a GUI "power off" button, try opening a terminal and issuing the command shutdown now -h as root and let us know the last bits that come to the screen, perhaps posting a copy of a digital photo it you think it will help. That might provide some idea of where the hangup is.

Thanks for your help. I've attached a digital photo of my hanged shutdown. This is a result of "shutdown -h now"

I noticed the hang only in kde4 of 14.1 it hangs for 30 seconds before going to run level 6. This does not happen with xfce4 or if it is done as root.
not complaining I am sure there is something causing it. Reason I haven't researched it is I am running multi arch on that machine so the info may not help a pure install.
