Slackware 14.1 kernel-*-3.10.107-x86_64-1 packages
 

Hi

I just upgraded to latest kernel patches on 14.1 (kernel-*-3.10.107-x86_64-2), but it seems this latest update is incompatible with the AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition 15.12 Proprietary Linux Graphics Driver (which has not been updated since 2015). But I do not have a copy of the previous kernel packages, and likewise all the Slackware mirrors do not have them either. Is there anywhere I can get the previous kernel packages (3.10.107-x86_64-1)? Or else, how would I got about rebuilding those from kernel sources?

Note: this is a desktop PC which does not use Bluetooth, so should not be vulnerable to that.
I use this proprietary AMD driver because it gives best performance for the AMD GPU I have, and is required for gaming.

Any help?

I think your kernel 3.10.107-x86_64-1 is a typo. You can do some searches at http://slackware.oregonstate.edu/slackware-14.1 for additional needs for download.

My memory is getting old timers disease thus faulty at times. I re-read your post and thought that I had seen more information before.
You can always get back to the original kernels via the links I provided before.

With a bit more playing around, I managed to compile and install vanilla kernel 3.10.107, but I still could not build the AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition 15.12 Proprietary Linux Graphics Driver; I suspect the compiling problem is caused by the updated kernel-headers package. I got the same problem if I booted the 3.10.104 kernel (which I still do have installed), hence why I suspect kernel-headers. But when I thought to try to roll-back that package, I could not find any .Slackbuild in the source section of the Slackware distribution for kernel-headers. So how does kernel-headers get built?

It's very improbable for the issue to be caused by kernel-headers, as they barely change (if at all). If the AMD catalyst/crimson driver fails to compile, it's most probably due to kernel-sources, or whatever is being linked to at /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build.
Besides, downgrading a kernel security patch is usually a bad idea.

Such a minor version bump usually doesn't break drivers, otherwise I'd suggest you look into the catalyst-test package on the AUR, to see if they have any patches to support your kernel, but I don't see any obvious ones.

Could you tell us what errors you get? That'd make it easier to troubleshoot you.

Hmmm, I do not know what happened before, but the driver compilation and installation works fine now with the latest 3.10.107-x86_64-2 kernel packages! Previously I got some error message about implicit declaration of undefined symbol or something, so I just tried to rebuild it to check the message, and it worked fine.

Anyway thanks for taking the trouble to read and reply.
