Slackware 14.1 and Android Development?

Hi guys,

I want to build android phone apps from scratch on a 14.1 system, is this viable?
I have the android stuff, libs, etc on my Ubuntu 14.04 build but I don't really like Ubuntu haha
Are the same libs, etc available via slkpkg / sbopkg as in Ubuntu or what?
Have to be able to run emulation, etc, just need to know if anyone has any experience in this?
Specifically need to run android studio and eclipse
thanks

I was trying to use Android Studio (you would need to install jdk first) but it is really sluggish in comparison to the Windows version. For the ADT I guess you would just need jdk as well.

Well, JDK is easy. Just download a package from here:

http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/openjdk/

Eclipse is even easier. You just untar it into your home directory and launch the executable from there.

Android Studio I haven't tried.

Instead of downloading Eclipse you should download the ADT bundle (Eclipse + ADT plugin + Android SDK) provided by Google. Android Studio is sluggish but runs fine if you have JDK. Another thing: I am not really sure if Oracle's JDK is needed but I use it just in case.

I did some Cyanogen ROMs while ago with Slackware. The only extra that i need to install was jdk 6 as far i can remember.

I have develop android applications with Eclipse and Idea.
Both IDE are available though slackbuilds.
Personally I prefer IDEA, it only requires JDK and ADT.

Yes, Slackware is very viable as an Android development system. If your Slackware is 64-bit, you'll want to enable multilib first though, as the Android SDK tools require it.

Android Studio runs fine also (though as moisespedro notes, it can get sluggish,) and is preferred nowadays over Eclipse ADT.

Hi guys thank you so much for answering!
OK, personal problems last week but I'm back!
I installed both android studio and the adt bundle- they seem similar?
A few questions as I really need help and wanna make some apps
Can someone break down for me how the apps work?
I saw some places some are html/xml files, etc but is there a way to reverse engineer the .apk files?
Can I open/extract them like a .deb file?
I saw a bunch of GUI type app makers but I want the LFS version LOL android apps from scratch you know
Any tutorials, etc would be great, I'm lookin around and finding lots of info but any is great from you guys, especially if you have made apps, etc??

Thanks a bunch

The SDK site has a getting started session. I highly recommend the Treehouse android course.
