I have a heat issue, the k8 module, and a HP laptop and I had and solved exactly the same issue. It was in the kernel. The very original slamd64-12.2 kernel did it. When I solved it, I exchanged mail with Fred Emmot and urged him to fork from slackware (32 bit only at the time) on the kernel. He did. The current slamd kernel is good.

Cool. Thanks much. I was hoping it would be something as simple as a modprobe. Usually, once I get a system up and running on this laptop I have to load the powernow-k8 module, and it seems to do the trick.

I have some free time coming up soon, and plan on tweaking out this laptop - Win7/Slack/Ubuntu - I also plan on having a lot of beer on hand because I might just need it! ;)

run sensors-detect and it will give you a pile of modules, usually picking up k8. Make sure they are loaded at boot.
