Slackware 13.0 X86_64 FireFox 3.5.2 problems within KDE 4.2

Hi,

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.2) Gecko/20090803 Slackware 13.0 13.0 Firefox/3.5.2
I have noticed that when copying links from the address bar that when first Right click the link then the copy is not available until I pick the body on the page then Right click again. The edit functions are then available.

I'm using KDE 4.2 and don't profess to know much about the environment.

Another issue seems to be the key presses timing. I've set the delay rather high to rid myself of a sticky key pressed. I've got large mits and tend to press lightly at times thus a key bounce.

KWORD presents other issues within KDE. The mouse sensitivity both H & V is tight. If you high light or attempt to select certain pieces of a doc the mouse will move rather quickly in the vertical move. Irritating! I have set the settings but it seems they are not uniform.

Any input? Pun intended!

I have always just highlighted the link in the address bar, then used Ctrl+c. I did notice that right clicking after highlighting that the edit menu shows up.

I have never tried adjusting the key presses timings either.

I opened a .doc file in KWord and did not notice what you experienced. That has to be the first time I have ever opened KWord. I didn't recognize a thing about the program. :)

I ain't much help.

I find that highlighting with the left mouse button followed by middle click to paste works for me.

Hi,

Yes, selecting the address via high lighting works. But my concern is as to why the right click requires that many picks. First right click does high light but I must pick the body then Right click again to be able to copy/cut/paste.

KWORD is fine, I think it's the way the mouse controls are handled.

FWIW, this always USED TO work for me, but since Slack13-64, I am finding a lot of corcumstances where simply highlighting something and middle-clicking to paste it elsewhere, is not working. I actually now have to highlight, right-click>copy, go somewhere, right-click>paste, otherwise I either paste nothing, or paste the last thing I pasted from some other event.

I haven't paid it enough mind to have determined what applications it affects, and when, but definitely within Firefox, the copy&paste mouse functionality is "different" than I am accustomed to, not in a good way.

(Maybe I ain't no help here either ;) )

I read something about the addressbar, and just did a test:

if you LEFT-click the address in the bar, it will highlight. Now, you can middle-click to another area or app, and the address will paste with middle-click. Maybe this addresses the exact issue?

That's my problem. I've never had to do a alternate pick then back to the address bar to do the selection. Your test is the norm for me now. Not that way before. I've always, Right Click the address bar and it would high light along with presenting a edit window with copy/cut/paste enabled for selection. Now I must Right Click (which high lights the bar & edit window options are grayed) then pick a place in the body then Right Click & the address bar is high light again along with edit window copy/cut/paste enabled.

The middle button works with no problem at any time. I want my address bar edit window function without that extra pick. I had it before as I do a lot of bar work when getting links. I don't remember anything wrong with previous version of FF for GNU/Linux or even M$.

I may just roll back my FF an see if that's the culprit.

Interesting, that I NEVER had that exact underlined behavior ^^^ before -- I've always had to triple-left-click to highlight the full addressbar. And right now, I see what you mean about the right-click edit menu being greyed out.

I am thinking that we should be looking into about:config for settings pertaining to this behavior -- either for existing options, or for options that are not in there yet, which define the mouse actions under certain conditions.

Matter of fact, Imma have a look at my about:config mouse/buttons area, and see if I can't somehow copy that (or the corresponding section of my prefs.js file) to a text file and maybe post it here for comparison with yours?

Will check back later.

I've noticed a difference in the 32 bit Firefox Navigation Toolbar as well.

With Firefox 3.0.14 (KDE 3.5.10) I used to be able to left-click (maybe twice?) on the favicon in the Navigation Toolbar and it highlighted the entire URL. That doesn't work with the new Firefox in Slack 13.0.

Now with Firefox 3.5.2 (KDE4.2.4) I noticed when I right-click in the Navigation Toolbar there is a Select All which highlights the entire URL.

Too much clicking going on but it works for me!

Hi,

Sasha, I think that I found part of the problem. I chose to use the aero theme instead of default. I'll have to see if the theme can be modified via about:config. Your mouse thought got me to look at the about:config and pop out local_install theme lines reminded me I had modified this version. I've done this in the past with no apparent problems until now. This mouse action has been bugging me for days. I finally started to investigate but in the wrong direction. I really want my mouse actions back the way it was before. Habit!

I know the double click and the middle but the Right Click was nice, one click then cut/copy/paste select. One less action.

I vaguely remember some notation about minor changes to the aero theme so I'll see if things can be modified or in stone.

I'm going to leave the thread open as others may have some addition or solutions.

Hi Onebuck,

I just went through a whack of KB articles on mozilla.org, as well as reviewed the list of (known) about:config entries we can possibly use. I found nothing at all relating to right-click, as far as the url bar is concerned.

I did find a few mouse-related ones, but nothing directly impacting the urlbar highlighting.

@ Onebuck + Chuck -- I am also using a non-default theme (it's called PitchDark) and ALSO, I have my urlbar on the very top of the browser, on the menu-toolbar, and my "navigation bar" un-checked. Not sure if the theme variances would affect how our clicking + urlbars work :p OR for that matter, which toolbar the urlbar is located on..

EDIT - PS - I tried to invent my own option: browser.urlbar.rightClickSelectsAll but to no avail ;)

I thought I tried this earlier but maybe I'm mistaken. When I double-click on the URL in the Navigation Toolbar the URL is fully highlighted and ready for either keyboard or mouse copying. I'm using the Oxygen theme and don't remember changing anything beyond the desktop effects which I've played with a lot. Go figure?

onebuck 09-14-2009 06:28 PM

Hi,

As I stated earlier the double click works but the action I would like to recover the right click combination. I switched to the default theme and the actions are totally different.

I think possibly the authors of the aero theme may hold the answer fro action within the theme.
