Slackware 13.0 32bit installation - complete?

I have decided to try to learn Linux by installing Slackware 13.0
I downloaded and burned a total of 6 iso images and started setup, partitioned everything and configured for a full install. It said it completed setup only after disk 3. I can boot up OK but it asks for a login and password (I know I only configured the root account which logs in fine)
My questions are
if only 3 disks are necessary for a full setup - what are the other 3 for?
do I have to installpkg the remaining packages on those disks
which appear to have the KDE I would like to use
what would be the est resource for someone who has never seen a unix or linux os to learn what commands to type to use it

Thank you

The other three are source and you didn't need to download those - that's only if you want to rebuild the system or parts of it, or otherwise examine the source, including the build scripts.

You need to create a user account for general work and 'adduser' is a handy wrapper for that. Run that as root and answer its questions.

You should have established a default window manager in setup but, if not or if you wish to change it, running 'xwmconfig' is a way to change that.

Try reading the SlackBook for more information.

Hello Scruff57,

Just to add that you hould create a normal user for daily use and not use the root account.

You can add an user and a few common groups like this:
Code:
useradd -m -G users disk wheel audio video cdrom plugdev power netdev -s /bin/bash yourusername
Then type passwd and choose a paswd for the user.

Although you may add a user with useradd I find the adduser script far easier as everything is set for you. Just do :
Code:
adduser user
with the username and hit the up arrow when it asks for additional groups. The shell, home directory and groups are all set up for you.
