Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I just finished installing Slackware 12 on my IBM R50e thinkpad. I am not getting any sound on it. If I try to play anything, it looks like its playing but I cant hear anything.
I have already unmuted the controls using alsamixer.
I have compiled 2.6.23 (linus-tree) with ALSA drivers
I have checked that the alsa-lib, alsa-oss, alsa-utils are already installed.
I installed Vector Linux 5.8 and it was able to play sound, Ubuntu was also fine and Sabyon was also fine. And I remember that originally when I installed Slackware 10.1/10.2 sound was working out of the box.
Is there something I am missing?
Following is the output from lsmod, lspci and aplay -l
Ok so the issue was the mixer setting. I was trying to unmute all channels using alsamix program. This looks like it has a problem. I muted all channels and unmuted Master, Master M, Headphone, PCM and Mic.
This solved, the issue. After that I did not experiment with it further. Just to be on the safer side. So there might be some other safe channels to unmute.
I decided to migrate from Fedora 6 to Slackware 12. I installed it properly and I had problems with video card, wheel mouse at first. I fixed them easily, but I could not hear any sound, although I tried to fix it for more than 3 hours. I am using KDE 3.5 and my soundcard is an onboard one on the Asus P4PE-X motherboard.
I ran alsaconf, and it configured soundcard with no error. Then I unmuted all the thing by using both alsamixer and Kmix. Even that, I could not fix that damn sound problem.
* These are some outputs about my soundcard from alsaconf.
