Slackware 12 & MPlayer

I'm very happy to report that the upgrade to Slackware 12 went flawlessly and was well worth the effort. This is where it should have been a long time ago, IMHO. :)
Only one small problem really, I can't get MPlayer to work. All the plugins, codecs, and dependencies have been installed and I've tried 3 different versions of MPlayer, but none of them work. Won't even fire up.
Any ideas?
Oh, the long running battle with hplip continues. It has never worked for me and that hasn't changed under Slackware 12. I've learned to live with it. :)
Thanks.

Have you tried the slackbuild script from slackbuilds.org?. It works fine for me. Remember you will want to download the default "blue" theme as well.

Yes, I've tried that one.
I typed "mplayer" in a terminal window and got the following response,

"mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: libdv.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

I've searched the hard drive and cannot find such a file. Anyone know what has to be installed to make this file available to MPlayer?
Thanks.

well I installed libdv-1.0.0-i486-1kjz.tgz from LinuxPackages for that one. It's built for 11.0, but works fine on my system.

What parts of your system have you replaced with unofficial packages, or what unofficial packages have you added to your system? There is no way that MPlayer can ask for things that weren't on the system when it was compiled unless some other parts of the system are depending on those things (resulting in some semblance of a recursive lookup).

Describe how hplip "doesn't work" for you.

"unofficial packages"? Not sure I follow that. I have only installed what is supposedly needed to make MPlayer work.
As to hplip, here is a old thread that describes it all, but, basically, once installed, hplip setup cannot see that there are any HP products attached to the system, when there are two, a printer, and a separate, standalone, scanner.

Thanks.

They don't make it easy, but I finally found it by looking at the list of all packages from KJZ.
Now when I type 'mplayer' in a terminal window I get a message that it can't find libxmms.so.1
:)
Oh, well.........

That's what I meant by "unofficial" packages.
You don't need *anything* from LP to make MPlayer work.
Installing things from there is often enough going to cause things like what you experienced.
Assuming they didn't do something ugly, removing those unofficial packages and then building the codecs and mplayer itself from SlackBuilds.org will result in a working MPlayer package.

About HPLIP, there are several different things detailed there, all (or most) of which appear to be PEBKAC. Please detail *your* problems here (or start a new thread).

I'm using MPlayer package from Alien and the only thing i need is install libdvdread and it's working like charm.

Thats why I compile from source to avoid extra dependencies someone else might add when they build it as a third party package.

PEBKAC means what?

Well the slackbuild compilation did not work, but the package from Alien fired right up.
Thanks for the hint.
